Cost of sanding floors and would you do it yourself?

I've had a quote of £950 for two rooms and a hall, approx 40 square metres. Does this sound right? Would hiring tools and doing it ourselves be considerably less? I've read a blog linked to on here on another thread and it sounds pretty gruesome. Has anyone else done this?

It's definitely something you can do yourself - we did. Heavy equipment and hot, dusty work, but definitely doable. As PPs have said, prep is absolutely key - a nail accidentally left in will wreck the machine and cost you in time and money. You can buy a little tool to hammer the nails into the wood so they don't stick out. If downstairs think about whether you want to do the step where you mix the sawdust with PVA and fill the gaps - if not, it could be draughty unless you insulate underneath the floor (also a straightforward DIY job that we did). A hefty rug would also be fine.

Saying that, if you pay the professionals they will do that bit for you, and you will get a perfect finish. Might be worth keeping the carpets over winter and saving up for the professionals? Either way, restoring the boards will look fantastic!

I planning to change the upstairs floor boards as it makes creaky noise.

Who does this kind of job, builder or carpenter?

For sanding the floor, it is better to turn to the help of masters. Since the appearance of the floor will depend on the evenness of the concrete floor. And if you cover the floor with epoxy, then all the irregularities will be very noticeable.
You can make repairs yourself, but then the quality will be worse, although not necessarily. If you have talent, then you will succeed.
