We've moved into a new house which has a lovely granite Worksop in the kitchen. Is there something I should be doing to it in a regular basis (apart from cleaning obvs! Grin

I just thought that as it is a natural substance it might need some sort of special attention.....?

never had posh granite before, only cheap laminate

we have a granite worktop. All we ever do with it is a wipeover with granite cleaner ( we use tesco's). Quick spray, then wipe off with an e-cloth.

Apparently you mustn't get lemon juice on granite, eats into it I think.

We have recently had granite work surfaces installed (love them) and our fitter recommended Lithofilm easy clean for daily use and then once a year Lithofilm Stain stop to resell it. Haven't done that yet but the daily cleaner is keeping it nice and shiny.

We've had ours for years (and it wasn't new when we moved in) and all we've ever done is give it a squirt with whatever kitchen cleaner's around then buff over with a clean dry cloth. Easy!

Thanks so much - it all sounds pretty easy! Thank god the previous owner didn't go for wooden work tops!

The lemon juice advice is wrong - it is a problem for marble.
Marble is delicate, a soft stone that and careful looking after
whereas
granite is really easy, you can use those limescale sprays on it for example.

Granite is porous so it is best to not let water etc sit on it in pools as it will soak in - but if that happens and it changes colour it is not permanent so don't worry.

I just wipe mine down with kitchen spray, then dry quickly with an eco cloth or old tea towel. That bit is important if you don't want streaks. It is pretty bombproof.

Had ours for 11 years. Just wipe with damp cloth or normal kitchen spray.

Gfplux · 12/10/2014 17:31

Sorry, should have said it looks like new after 11 years.

We always used glass spray on our granite. Started off with special worktop spray and than ran out and resorted to windowlene- fantastic! Don't have to worry about meticulously wiping the stuff off to get rid of smears. Quick swipe and it's gleaming.

I just wipe down with a damp cloth and use a granite spray every couple of months. Granite is so easy. I had wood in my last house and although it looked beautiful I was like kitchen policewoman whenever anyone put anything hot on it.
