kitchen floor help

We have just put in a new kitchen (off white units, light oak effect laminate worktop). There is currently no flooring beyond floorboards in half the room and concrete in the other half, and I am at a real loss as to what to put down.

The space is small (long and narrow with units down one side of the wall only). Probably no more than 8sqm of flooring to be laid. Budget is limited as we have spent too much on the rest of the house, so I would like to spend as little as possible without cutting any vital corners.

I have looked at oak effect laminate and pale grey porcelain and ceramic tiles. Bit worried about durability of laminate and coldness of tiles.

The other worry I have is whether the fact that the room is half floorboards and half concrete might cause me problems.

Any and all advice and tips welcome!

How about vinyl? Check out colour flooring company, we have this in bathroom and will be fitting in kitchen soon too

If budget is limited I wouldnt think about tiles as your floor will need some prep work to be able to fit tiles which may cost as much as the flooring itself. You can get a tile effect laminate which is very nice for the kitchen or as already said get some vinyl. There is lovely vinyl about these days but again your floor will prob need some prep work but wouldnt cost as much as the prep work needed to fit floor tiles

Thanks both, hadn't considered vinyl but I will take a look.

my bamboo (pic on my profile) copes fine with the join between the concrete and the planks : its just glued down , nothing complicated

SASASI · 08/10/2014 21:39

What about kearndean? More robust than vinyl (I can't stand the stuff) but not as cold as tiles. I have it in my bathroom & it's fab.

we had a part wood / part concrete kitchen floor. we had marmoleum which was lovely - warm and soft and great for kids to play on.

TalkinPeace · 08/10/2014 22:12

bamboo is \round £15 a square metre btw
and its not cold

Ihatemytoes · 08/10/2014 22:16

Another vote for marmoleum.

Are you me, OP???

Same situation & going for marmoleum. My area is 30 Sq m & will cost between 2.7k & 3.3k all in depending on whether I go with local independent or John Lewis.

HTH!

We have ceramic tiles in our kitchen and I'm not a fan. Cold, noisy and if the DC you drop anything it will smash, nothing survives Sad

Would love to have installed Karndean in our bathroom but it is ££££ so we went with cheap and cheerful vinyl for £10/sqm. I think it looks nice, it's easy to clean and it's warm underfoot.

AJane123 · 09/10/2014 15:01

Have you considered stone or terracotta? It's not as cold as you might think - in fact both of these hold the heat really well!

poocatcherchampion · 11/10/2014 21:29

same situation. we are going for laminate.

tiles way too cold.

it will also run into the hall.

Purplecircle · 11/10/2014 21:35

Definitely not laminate. Mine peeled if the floor wasn't dried after washing (crap ex-cleaner)

madasamarchhare · 12/10/2014 11:36

Another vote for karndean. We have tile effect it in our bathroom been down 9 years still looks like new. Have now had it put in our dining room but this time wood effect and just as pleased with results. Really warm easy to maintain and above all hard to damage.
