Waste disposal units

when we lived in America (15 years ago now) the house had a waste disposal unit so all the horrible peelings and leftover stuff went down the sink. It was fab.

Never hear of them over here, have they never caught on over here? Are they horribly unenvironmentally friendly or unhygienic or something?

Just idly planning a new kitchen.

Yes they certainly are available here if you want one. They just don't seem to be very popular.

They do them yes. But food waste is actually composted now by a lot of local councils so not sure you'd need one.

they are very environmentally unfriendly, using electricity and clean water to dispose of waste food. Your waste food should be nothing except peelings (which aren't 'horrible' !!), tea bags and coffee grounds, all of which compost easily. Either in your garden or collected by the council.

maybe things have changed in the States; but I don't get the impression they are that bothered about any of the waste issues.

Yes our food waste is composted. I hate the compost bin. I have an irrational dislike of it, all the leftover food mashed together turns my stomach (pathetic I know).

I presume its much more environmentally friendly to compost though?

Ok that solves it then. I suspected as much. Composting it is then.

You're right about waste issues not being an issue in the states.

yes, composting uses no energy. Or rather the bugs use the energy from the food!

leftover food? Serve less, then you waste less.

Ha ha, DC are still fairly young at the moment so am looking forward to bigger, more reliable appetites!

But have put the waste disposal dream to bed.

They cause water pollution, DH is completely against them (retired river water chemist).
