Extension - how big?

We are planning to biuld an extension to the side of our house, so it will be (external measurement) 7.5m by something, and are trying to decide how far out we should go. Of course we are trying to keep down the cost while having enough space, so wwyd.

We want to fit in,
Downstairs - an office (for one person), and a second living room (doesn't need to fit the dinning table as thats elsewhere, (but poss to be used as a bedroom if we need one downstairs when we are older).
Upstairs - a toliet and shower room and two bedrooms (each for one child/teen).

I'm thinking the bedrooms are the main issue as they will be 3m x ?, but don't really know what is a reasonable size, esp as the kids will have a shared living room for when they have friends over.

You need to draw up some draft plans (they don't need to be perfect, but do them to scale….some graph paper and/or a scale ruler like this is helpful.

Measure your existing rooms, draw out some draft plans, measure existing furniture (or get dimensions of any planned furniture) and add them to the pictures. Think about how much space you'll need for things like walking past a dining table etc

We calculated the size of our extension like this - worked out how big we wanted the kitchen area to be in terms of cupboards etc, worked out where the table would go and what table, made the extension fit the stuff that needed to go in it.

Forgot to add - you can also use masking tape to 'adjust' your existing rooms if planned rooms are smaller. So e.g. mask off an area of existing bedroom, put all the furniture into it, and see how it works.
