Turning a window into a door

Any idea how complicated it is & how much it would cost? Since we're likely going to have to pull the kitchen out in the new house we're wondering if we'd have the budget to replace the window in the end wall with French doors that open directly into the garden. Also do you need planning permission?

Just done this! If you don't increase the width, it's very simple. If you need to increase the width, it will cost more as they will need to put in the extra support.

Thanks. We would be increasing the width (I think), so presumably we'd need the support.
Are you glad you've done it?

It's very straight forward and you won't need planning permission as you're not extending the house by putting a door in. However you will need building control as it has to been done safely.

Yep, love it. We also have doors off the lounge, but that is carpeted. So I'm going to be encouraging use of the new doors, as that bit is wooden floor :-)

It's nice because you just want to be able to dash back and forth to the kitchen. Think of all the cups of tea, and requests for drinks etc... Plus the extra light is nice.

we have that - the only potential problem is the possible wind-tunnel effect if you have front door open too - severe slamming can crack glass
