How much do you think it'd cost to 'do' our kitchen?

We bought a house that needed lots of work and have done almost everything to get it up to a good habitable standard. We did a quick temporary clean and paint of the kitchen as we new we wouldn't have the money to do it properly for a few years. I'm trying now to get an idea of how much we need to save.

It's quite a large space is 27' long and currently finished in the ever delightful artext, it's single story (was a 1980's extension). Our plan is to get rid of all the artex either skimming or boarding over the walls and taking down the ceiling. We want to open up to the rafters and put in some large velux windows in the roof, we also want the inevitable bifold doors across the back wall. Aside from the cost of the kitchen units how much do you think we need to save for the building work, windows and a good quality wood floor?

It depends whether you are paying someone to do the building works or whether you plan on doing some of the work yourselves (eg my H is very handy so installed our wood floor himself). I also think it is the add ons that make it expensive, the unseen bits so for us (going through it now) new electricity cabling to support double oven, dropping pipework etc. I'd guess £10k for works inc flooring, then kitchen units etc on top of that.

DH's abilities don't got much further than putting up shelves. I might do the painting, depends on how flush we are.
