Urgent - anyone with a DIY kitchen and have a corner post?!

mandy214 · 27/09/2014 10:02

Kitchen installer is here, says we need a corner post (haven't ordered one). Can see the dimensions on the website but they don't give the exact dimensions - just wanted someone to measure theirs for me!!!

Arghhhhh! Any assistance gratefully received!!

If you mean a support post for work top mines 7and half inches in circumference stainless steel adjustable height

Mine is set at 34inches to underside of worktop.
It was an add on , some time after fitting the kitchen decided on another worktop

The front profile is about 2 and quarter inches

mandy214 · 27/09/2014 14:59

I'm not sure thats the same thing, I mean the thin piece you have sometimes at the point where the 2 runs of units meet when you have an L shaped kitchen.

I think they call then e3nd sections or pieces. I ripped out the kitchen and it had them, so I think I am on track. I don't know how you will get round that if you can source one before the kitchen is finished. Could he not leave that part until you get hold of the part?

roneik · 27/09/2014 15:19

Mandy you said post not panel, I am confused enough without extra confusion

Just kidding Grin

roneik · 27/09/2014 15:30

Almost sure they are the same size as the side of a base unit. {from memory}

roneik · 27/09/2014 15:32

Unless your units have adjustable legs, then they would be taller

wormshuffled · 27/09/2014 16:59

There's a video on the diy kitchens website about corner posts, they stop handles from clashing.

georgeousgeorge · 27/09/2014 17:00

www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchen-units/plinths-panels-and-accessories/corner-posts/wp4189/

is this the bit you need?

I wonder if mandy means the wooden trim used on the front of two units to joint them, when two units meet on a corner, It's l shaped and is 28 and quarter inches tall and it's almost hidden when the unit doors are closed.
They keep the units far enough apart to stop doors brushing into each other.
Each surface of the L shape are an 1and a quarter inches wide.
When screwed onto the units they help make the base units stable at the front as well,

roneik · 27/09/2014 17:59

I have just been and measured mine , sorry but lines crossed as I would not call that a post it's the fitting trim, comes in the same color as the units, in my case they are beech color and they were not cheap

mandy214 · 27/09/2014 19:15

Thank you, yes its the corner post. If you go through to corner posts via corner base units, it says 70. If you go through accessories and the link George says, it says 60!!Arghh!

Well mines one piece, Anyway just a reminder the sink has to be earthed with heavy duty cable to a clamp on the pipes , make sure it is, Also fit a couple of isolators inline on the 15mm pipe at this stage as later if you need to change taps you can turn off the water without affecting the rest of the house. That post or trim can be bought off the shelf in b&q in various colors. If the fitter is any good he could knock one up at a push

PigletJohn · 27/09/2014 20:21

Sinks do not have to be earthed. Kitchen taps do not have to be earthed.

Main Bonding connects metallic services (such as watermains and gaspipes) to the electrical Main Earthing Terminal when they enter the house. Having been bonded on entry, they do not need to be bonded again.

Supplementary Bonding in rooms with a fixed bath or shower (but not kitchens) often may be needed to connect each pipe that enters the bathroom, to the earth conductor of each electrical circuit that enters the bathroom. Having been bonded at point of entry, they do not need to be bonded again (e.g. at every tap)

Many builders think that kitchen sinks have to be bonded, but there has never been an electrical regulation requiring it.

you want to get the corner post to match your doors, not your carcases and it should be on the "plinths panels and accessories" page of your door style. The one I looked at was 70mm but check the exact range.

It should have come as a sub item with the unit though, so are you sure it isn't with the doors or somewhere in the order? as here

mandy214 · 28/09/2014 13:13

Thanks. Yes but there was an option to say you didnt want it which I seemingly must have gone for. We are getting it to match the doors (and I have checked the dimensions for the particular range but they had 2 different measurements even for 'my' range).

Ive fitted plenty of diy kitchens. If you get your fitter to set the corner posts at 625mm off the wall to the middle of the centre post you wont go far wrong. The centre posts from this company are 2 piece rather than one so are made to be cut down. The max you could get away with is approx 650 and minimum would be 595mm (595mm only on a handle less door and not really recommended)

625mm is standard

sjmkitchens · 28/09/2014 18:56

by the way, if you are fitting the corner post at a later date get your fitter to move the blanking panel before fitting the unit as it will be a pain to move it once fitted especially if you have a unit, and not an appliance, perpendicular to it

mandy214 · 28/09/2014 20:38

Thanks that's very helpful although he's fitted the units and left space for the corner post. I think he's left 70mm to the doors if you see what I mean so fingers crossed it'll work out!!

Makes quite a big corner post but should be fine and look good. Enjoy your new kitchen:)
