Hi,We are relocating soon from Wales to Swindon. We have no clue about Swindon but a quick search online led us to North Swindon area to buy a house.Currently,we are looking at SN25 and SN2 area of Swindon. Can anyone tell me which area is good for living with family? And I do have a toddler with Down syndrome and a 6 year old daughter. With me not driving,I would need an area with easy bus routes to hospitals, health centre, sch etc as always can't depend on hubby as he will take his car to work :)
Thank you.

Hello! I have a friend that lives in Taw Hill (SN25) and I know she loves it there. It seems quite well set up for families and seems like a nice safe area. I don't know a huge amount about it but just wanted to say if you're moving to Swindon I think that is a good area to look at. I'm in Highworth (just to the east of Swindon) which is really nice, and there are also plenty of lovely other towns and villages in the area.

One word of warning though - there is currently a consultation to close down quite a number of the children's centres in the area so I'd do some research on which ones will be affected if that is important to you.

Good luck! I'm from Wales originally too but really like it round here!

Hello, I'm from Wales too and now live in upper Stratton which is an SN2 postcode. I love it here. We have a row of shops including various takeaways, co-op, florists, butchers and sandwich shops within easy walking distance. There is also bus routes on easy walking distance and taxis into town very reasonably priced.

Before I moved I researched a bit and apparently try to avoid any areas which start with a P such as Penhill, Park North and Park South as these areas tend to be a bit rougher.

Good luck with your search Smile

Hi Babe, if you have an iphone and look at the maps it shows upper Stratton but failing that - if you look at a map, there is the A4311, so you're looking to the east of that. It joins onto to B4006 which heads out to the north-east and then goes south so you want to be underneath that road. As the B4006 heads south there is a kind of dog-leg, so you want to stay to the north and west of the dog-leg. Although there are nice areas between the B4006 and the A419, and also to the north of the B4006 to the easy of Cricklade Road. I'm sure there are loads of other really nice areas too but I've only lived here for a year so don't really know too much yet.

If you want to have a chat or I can do anything to help, drop me a pm Smile

My dad lives in SN25, and my aunt and uncle (I don't live in Swindon anymore but grew up there). North Swindon and the new estates off Thamesdown Drive are very nice - there are quite a few primary schools, and the estates seem to be built around a primary school, GP and corner shop. Lots of small playgrounds and cycle paths/paths. There is a massive asda Walmart, and out-of-town shopping area (boots, M&S, David Lloyd, library) around there as well. I would think you would be in walking distance of a shop, the big asda and primary school. The buses are reasonable, I would think you would need to change to get to the hospital from there though...

I don't know Stratton/Upper Stratton so well - my grandparents lived in Upper Stratton years ago! The houses are older. You might want to look at secondary schools from there as I'm not sure where it feeds into...

I have a young family, if we were going to buy in Swindon we'd buy in North Swindon (SN25) - it is all new estates and some people might argue it's not got a lot of character but it's safe and good for kids, the schools have good reputations as well.

Agree Penhill, Pinehurst, Park North/South are all areas I'd avoid...

Feel free to PM me any questions

Abbey meads, redhouse, oakhurst are all estates (new - some newer than others) off of Thamesdown drive as are Taw Hill, St Andrews Ridge and a few others - they are all walkable from each other and to asda etc...although maybe up to 25 mins for some - they all branch off of Thamesdown Drive - st Andrews ridge and Abbey meads at the top and Taw Hill at the bottom.

Hayden End is very nice - the houses are still new build but a little older (maybe 10 -15) years - I have a relative who lives on Haydon End Lane! It's a 2 minute walk through to asda but they've planted and planned the paths well so you don't overlook a major supermarket/car park - there's also a Morrisons that side. It's very quiet, lots of families.

Haydon Wick is slightly older again (relatives there too!) but also safe and nice - it covers a slightly bigger area - the side bordering the newer estates and asda is probably better if you are without a car as I'm not sure about transport links - the other side bordering Rodbourne, Cheney Manor, Moredon I don't know so well. I don't know about schools around there either as all my relatives are older in that bit!

To be honest I don't think you'd go far wrong in any of those areas - orbital shopping centre (asda etc) is also a bit of a bus hub so if you were walking distance to there you should be able to get out and around. Maybe worth looking at schools and availability as that may dictate your area!

Re flooding - nobody I know has ever been flooded!
