Can net curtains ever be chic??

Just moved into a very old house on a main road. I can cope with the goldfish bowl effect on the ground floor, but struggling to come to terms with the fact that I can no longer walk round in my pants in my own bedroom.

I want to decorate it in a rustic-y style and thought vintage French nets might be a good solution and in keeping with the age of the house. Have people seen anything suitable? Or is the general consensus that they are just vile??

I saw some really pretty nets at a curtain material place.
I used a film on my bathroom window. It has birds in white and the rest looks etched. Just spray water on the window and the film clings to it. Loads of patterns. Amazon do them.

I'd sooner have net curtains than the office-like blinds I've got at the minute :( (only just moved in)

Fayrazzled · 25/09/2014 11:26

I think voile panels (as opposed to net curtains) can look lovely in the right room.

ProjectGainsborough · 25/09/2014 11:33

These! I want these !

Where to find??

they look like table runners cut in half.

We're going for voile panels but made into roman blinds so they aren't always down but you can put them down for privacy and light. We have an old property too on a main road so I share your feelings!

Blackeyez09 · 25/09/2014 12:00

Exactly my problem!
My windows are massive victorian ones two ...
I'm either going for shutters (but very expensive) on the living room and cafe net curtains on the sash windows of the bedrooms!

I think cafe nets can look very chic! I'm just struggling to find where sells them?!
Any ideas

Just been to dunelm. Sorrento voile. Might be what you are looking for

cestlavielife · 26/09/2014 16:04

ikea nordis or ninni sheer

I've ended up with pin stripe nets in our house. The living room window is just too big to be uncovered, and our bedroom is facing the front. They are pretty simple and the pin stripe is led obvious than a pattern

MrsCakesPrecognition · 26/09/2014 16:29

etsy?

ouryve · 26/09/2014 16:37

Ebay, too.

Though etsy might be better if you have several windows to fill - you might find someone who can make them to specification.

Plain Muslin works. You can also buy thin blinds that do the same job as nets: we have one in our bathroom instead of frosted glass.

Nets proper though do look old lady-ish.

madamemuddle · 26/09/2014 17:35

Voile roller blinds are my solution.

John Lewis sells them as ready mades. Blinds2Go and Blinds Boutique can make to measure.

jimmybim · 26/09/2014 17:39

Have you thought of bottom up blinds?

Tanacot · 26/09/2014 17:39

We have the mirror film. Can't abide nets.

ProjectGainsborough · 26/09/2014 20:00

So many ideas, thank you. I had kind of assumed my solution would be handsewn by semi sighted old ladies in France, so dumelm is a bit of a shock.

I reckon they are due a come back. I had plain voile half nets on my sash windows in London, perfect balance of privacy and daylight. Lace is coming back in for wedding dresses, only a matter of time before windows catch up Grin

Pipbin · 26/09/2014 23:23

I have plain voiles at my bedroom bay window, they go right to the floor. Cheap as chips too: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-the-basics-plain-slot-top-voile-panel-white/p125378

BumWad · 26/09/2014 23:31

Ikea and Dunelm do great patterned a coloured voile panels I think they're fab better than office type blinds!

elephanteraser · 26/09/2014 23:40

of course they can, i just have plain 'nets' that are longer so gather at the hem, they look good. just keep them clean.

ginzillas · 28/09/2014 16:25

Voile panels look lovely. We've put them in our living room which is very open to the road. All the neighbours have nets. I much prefer the way ours look and they fit well with a shabby chic, rustic look, of which I'm a fan! Got them in Primark for a few quid and they're easily washable too.

TitcHt48 · 24/09/2017 12:09

Asked before but still not sure. Is there a solution 2nosey people I really would like some sort stick on stuff but I want to be able to see out. If I got nets would it be best to put them straight across therefore letting light in any ideas would help thanks

JoJoSM2 · 24/09/2017 19:48

Personally, not a fan of net curtains. I'd probably consider blinds, plantation shutters or bottom-up blinds. The last option can be pretty unobtrusive and go well with curtains. Depending on the depth of your front garden, you could also consider planting that would add privacy.
