Hi everyone.

We have just purchased a small 2 bed semi with the plan being to eventually extend in a few years. We hope to move in just after Christmas but the whole thing is bare!

First off what sort of kitchen and bathroom flooring is best? We have a dog and a cat so need something that won't lift if it gets wet. Kitchen is cream units with wooden benches and bathroom is a white suite with white tiles and I would like the same flooring in both.
I like stone but what sort of costs are we looking for with this? Can I lay it myself?

Secondly we need some carpets in both upstairs bedrooms. OH won't have plain but what sort of patterns don't look completley vile?

Sofas- fabric or leather with cats? Patterned or plain?

We also need fencing, wallpapering etc but this is all cosmetic!

On a different note we also need applicances. The house is small so we were looking at washer dryers to save space, are these any good and if so which one should we go for?
Also does anyone have a smeg fridge freezer as we like the look of these?

Thanks!

Sofa and cats - I would say avoid leather as claws can be sharp. When I was choosing a new sofa years ago, I took a fabric sample home and dragged my cat's claw along it to see if it caught. One fabric did and one didn't.

Smeg - I have a 50's style Smeg fridge and would not have another. The small interior freezer door is broken and a new plastic one would cost about about £60. It also constantly freezes up. Looks great though!

Good luck in your new home. Don't rush into decisions.

Your DH won't have plain carpet? WTF?

My cat scratched our old leather sofas, and I'd avoid cotton covers as that's lovely to sharpen your claws on, apparently.

sorry, also meant to say, when choosing big things like carpet, tile and sofas, I think it can be best to go neutral and use accessories like cushions/art/paint/wallpaper to jazz things up a bit.

You don't want to be sick of the expensive things in 10 mins and want to change them.

My cats have never damaged our leather sofas, is an option to buy a 2nd hand one and see what yours do? I love the practicality of leather with pets and kids and allergies...

Washer Dryers are rubbish.

Yep go as neutral as you can and accesorize.
