Hi we are currently unable to use our open fire due to downdraft so thinking of installing a stove. It might involve some rearranging of the fireplace so was wondering if anyone had any experience of local fitters/stoves etc?(Colchester ,Essex)

start by consulting your local chimneysweep. Experienced sweeps know a lot about chimneys. He is likely to be experienced in local houses built like yours, and to diagnose why your chimney does not work. He will also know the local suppliers and installers.

You will have to get the chimney looked at anyway.

Thank you but we have had all sorts give us advice ...we have put cowls on the top etc etc we have other chimneys that draw beautifully in the house ...our own conclusion is that there is a crack somewhere but we are unable to see up as adjacent to a garage.we have spent so much on it so far. That I am reluctant to spend any more.the fire that we burn is also not efficient to solely heat the room when it's very cold (as mostly outside walls and large bay)so thought that the stove would sort all our concerns?

the stove is no good (indeed, dangerous) without a functioning chimney. So you need to get that sorted.

yes, it will be more efficient; an open fire is under 30%, a stove can be over 70%.

Could try the HETAS website for an installer?

Oh I thought it went up a flu & the chimney is lined

Yes, you just need your chimney lined as part of the installation. No big deal. We used Ambleside Sweeps to do ours, based in Basildon and very reasonably priced.
