shower next to window - how to get privacy and not drench the window

So finally got the keys for new house. Not had a shower there yet but the bath with overhead shower is right next to a window which has that glass which makes everything look blurred but you can still make out objects.

2 questions. First, what's the beat solution to the problem of passers by seeing you in the shower? It faces onto the road which is a quiet road but still. Its otherwise a nice, tiled, modern and fairly minimalist bathroom. Am guessing either a roller blind or tilt blind will be suggested but would want something that looks good.

Second and related to this, want to prevent the window ledge and windows getting drenched everytime we have a shower so the above blinds would probably not meet this need. I know you can have a wrap around shower curtain but I hate these really, find they stick to you, look crap and get mouldy. The other side of the bath has a glass panel which is good.

So any solutions you have seen? Feel free to link up any good products. Thanks in advanceSmile

My window is alongside my soon-to-be-shower-above-bath.

I have tiled the entire window sill, sides and top.

I don't know whether to get a blind. I may have to have a shower with the light on, and get someone to stand outside and tell me how blurry (or not!) I am.

I haven't got a glass panel yet, but that may be the solution. Yup.

Watching with interest in case anyone else comes up with good ideas for this scenario.

I have a window in my shower.
We're not overlooked at the back but I suppose the next door neighbours could see blurry me from the bottom of their gardens. I've not done anything about it yet but I've had two ideas;

  1. Low tech solution. Get a compression rod and cut a shower curtain to size to fit the window recess.
  2. High tech solution. Have a custom made glass door over the window (possibly frosted) to make it a bit like a cabinet

We have just changed a bathroom to a shower room and the only layout was shower next to the window.. Full view of road. We had an option of blocking in the window with tiling (no light), frosting it ( didn't like that ), fitting a blind ( couldn't find one) so in the end we have had a fully waterproof shutter made and it is fab. Slightly pricier than a blind, but v easy to 'shut' when in shower and can clean the glass.

JustOneMinute · 20/09/2014 23:33

The windowsill and recess are fully tiled and waterproofed

I often forget to pull down the blind but the window is frosted, I live in the hope that some attractive rich female pensioner will be smitten by my still slim body

Well do people look up at windows or walk into lamp posts?

I vote for blind, oh I always pull the cord the wrong way and it doubles back on itself, but I enjoy random ,and try not to remember which way to pull

Different is good

I never leave the bloody shower gel where I can find it , but enjoy the mayhem fighting the water going everywhere and nearly tripping over the last bar of soap that somehow slithered into the bath

Thanks justoneminute, who made the waterproof shutter for you, any pics by chance?Smile. Probably we would go for a frosted one.....do you think having two frosted windows would give more privacy?

The windowsill is tiled but don't really want the window and frame getting constantly wet.

We went for the low tech solution of having another shower curtain over the window (so nog wrap around). Works well enough.

Anyexcuse · 21/09/2014 17:08

I had fun making a solution at a stained glass class. It sits within the fully tiled window frame and looks great (in my opinion at least).

We have this issue. The spray on stuff that makes your window frosty doesn't do the job, particularly with the light on, and it begins to peel away in the humidity. John Lewis sell moisture resistant blackout roller blinds, these work well for us and are not expensive (£33 for our width) and it took almost 2 years for the fabric to need replacing, there were spots of mould appearing. You could get the shelf tiles put down at a slight angle so water runs away. Another idea I might try when our windows get replaced is to fix a perspex panel over the front of the window recess, where the shower sprays onto the shelf; if I did that now we wouldn't have access to where the bathroom window opens. Good luck.

My mother has this. The windowsill and surrounding walls are tiled. The lower part of the window is frosted and she has a roller blind over the whole lot.

We keep an e cloth on the glass panel and wipe down after showering, reduces grout cleaning and mops up excess water.

MrsAlwaysRight · 21/09/2014 21:10

I have put a very large plant on the window sill - hope it does the trick but I am now slightly concerned as to how effective it is and whether I may have inadvertently traumatised my neighbours Grin

Boysclothes · 21/09/2014 21:14

We had frosted glass which did the trick privacy wise. Keep a squeegee in the shower and do the glass panel and window after your shower and just quickly mop the shelf down with an e cloth, takes seconds.

Itscurtainsforyou · 21/09/2014 21:17

We have a folding shower screen between the shower and the windowsill which protects the window/windowsill from water and a vertical blind over the window for privacy although I rarely use it

The folding screen can be folded back when dry/not in use and is hardly noticeable.

Tyranasaurus · 22/09/2014 07:38

I've seen the window 'bricked up' with glass bricks on the inside which sounds a little naff but actually looked really nice.

jaynebxl · 22/09/2014 07:47

We had this once and hung a navy shower curtain over the window. Cheap and easy.
