Double oven to smeg or not to smeg..

KJSa · 16/09/2014 11:46

Slightly boring question but, I'm looking for a new oven and have pretty much decided on a built-under one- shunning those massive range cookers. However, built-under are smaller in size and want to go for the largest I can get, smeg seem to do the biggest version but I've heard that' smeg are a bit crap.

Anyone recommend smeg or have this type of oven with a big capacity..!!!???

Much obliged

Smeg are crap. I haven't used their ovens but their fridges are just appalling. To make matters worse their customer service is non existent.

I would go with another brand.

kmdesign · 16/09/2014 13:39

Calling Smeg a 'bit crap' is like calling Hitler a 'slightly right of centre'.

Smeg is utter sh*te

KJSa · 16/09/2014 14:51

You don't mince your words! Damning indeed. I thought smeg may be crap, and the name doesn't really do it for me either.

Any ideas on a better brand??

Neff/Siemens/Bosch are the best mid-priced products.

We have s smeg range cooker and I love it Smile

Not sure whether the quality has diminished in the last 10 years or so but that's how long I've had a Smeg mini range oven and I absolutely rate it the best cooker I've used or seen - apart from the high end range cookers such as Falcon and so on.

It's dual fuel free standing, not built in. The top oven works fine. The bottom oven is the bomb. The glass door is amazing and the glass has only needed replacing once (inside got damaged when man came to fit new fan last year, and I forgot how to remove the door so he leaned on it) in all that time. I did it myself.

It feels really good to open and shut. Not tinny or clunky. The inside is coated with something, I don't know what but it isn't like the usual speckled finish or enamel. I think it cleans itself.

The knobs are lovely and not plasticky. The hob is beautiful - cast iron stands and so on, makes a big difference as nothing slides around on it.

The only issue I have had with it is that the thermocouples on the hob were a bit out of kilter when it was new, and the man had to come and adjust them as it was being too safe - wouldn't let the burners light unless I held them for about half a minute! But it is fine now. That was a generic problem and I imagine it's now been sorted out.

I nearly bought a new cooker when we were moving house the other month, as it wasn't going to fit in the new kitchen, but the new one was more money than the Smeg was and far less good quality. Ended up removing the kitchen (which was a bit worse for wear anyway) and I'm taking it with me Smile

Love love love it. I only got it as it was ex display and had a couple of hundred knocked off. But I'm so glad I did.

I've got 2 single ovens side by side, with an induction hob over the top. The same size as a range but much bigger ovens.
Mine are Siemens.

whats4teamum · 16/09/2014 18:33

I had a smeg. Started to break within months engineer constantly coming out. Ditto the smeg dishwasher which needed a part replacing that cost £300 was made of plastic and took 6 weeks to arrive. Never again.

wonkylegs · 16/09/2014 19:06

I'd never buy another Smeg appliance after our Smeg dishwasher caught on fire. Luckily our cleaner was there and managed to turn the electrics off & put it out with only minimal damage (& slightly hysterical cleaner though)
A few weeks later my dads (the same model bought a month or so after us at the other end of the UK) did the same thing.
Smeg claimed it wasn't their problem as they had no record of faults in that model so they decided it must be 'user error' in both cases - ha apparently you aren't supposed to use their appliances or they might catch on fire!

flingingmelon · 16/09/2014 19:11

Live my neff double oven, especially the self cleaning bit Smile

Soonish · 16/09/2014 19:13

I concede the parts are VERY expensive. It feels very solid though. I think that is what I like about it.

Shame on them for not admitting fault. That always turns me off a company.

DefinitleySpeltWrong · 16/09/2014 19:19

I have two full size single ovens with a large 5 ring hob above. It's very practical. I constantly use both ovens. I have neff ones (like on the great british bakeoff)

OnePlanOnHouzz · 17/09/2014 07:29

which ever product you go for - spend the most you can afford and if at all possible get a pyro clean option !!

KJSa · 17/09/2014 12:06

Ok so neff seem to be creeping up the poles..wow, how many people do you cook for definitelyspeltwrong?

Thanks for advice...

I have a smeg fridge and I love it, it is one of the best things I've ever bought.

mistlethrush · 17/09/2014 12:14

We got a Smeg cooker with the house - unfortunately. It had one large oven and it took perhaps 35 mins to get to somewhere near the right temperature (it never got really hot) despite being a fan oven. We've eventually managed to replace it and having something that heats up in under 5 mins and stays at the temperature you asked it to is wonderful.

PigletJohn · 17/09/2014 12:41

Neff is a brand name owned by Bosch.

kmdesign · 17/09/2014 12:53

PigletJohn - Slight correction. Neff is a brand (along with Gaggenau) jointly owned by BSH home appliances, a company jointly owned by Siemens and Bosch. Bosch, Neff and Siemens (and to an extent Gaggenau) are all very similar appliances

PigletJohn · 17/09/2014 12:56

Bosch and Siemens own BSH, Bosch and Siemens each own their brand names, of which Neff is owned by Bosch. BSH does not own brand names.

DefinitleySpeltWrong · 17/09/2014 12:57

I usually cook for 4 or 5 people. I regularly end up using both ovens. When I bought them I asked about the increased energy costs of heating a full size oven over a half oven but was told it wasn't an issue. It might be something to look into though.

PigletJohn · 17/09/2014 12:58

or perhaps I am wrong. Wikipedia says that BSH owns the name.

fairgroundsnack · 17/09/2014 13:01

I have a smeg range cooker and it's brilliant.

Whooshtheyweregone · 17/09/2014 13:07

We have a Smeg oven, hob, fridge, freezer and dishwasher that all came with the house and I was quite excited about. I have one word of advice. DO NOT BUY SMEG PRODUCTS!! They are terrible.

Soonish · 17/09/2014 14:27

Mistle, it sounds like something was probably wrong with it.

Mine heats up really fast and has never been unreliable like that.
The top oven (non fan) is a bit slower.

mistlethrush · 17/09/2014 15:43

Soonish - we had it serviced and checked and checked again, to no avail. We just thought it was smegging awful and nearly threw a party when it finally left the building Grin
