Victorian Fireplaces

We just moved into a Victorian terrace and looking to replace the current fireplace in the lounge which is a bit of an eyesore.

www.englishfireplaces.co.uk look really nice. Has anyone ever used them? Marble is first choice but what about sandstone or limestone?

Budget 2 to 2.5K (will need insert and gas fire also) or do you have any recommendations for any other companies?

Cheers.

I would rethink the gas fire option. They are sooooooo expensive to use. We had an open fire in our Victorian house. The surround and insert were from Ebay and we had a stone hearth from a local reclamation yard.

Chesney's are nice. I think they are stocked by englishfireplaces

LadyKooKoo thanks I doubt we would use the gas fire that much as the room is small but would be good as another source of heat or maybe not willl have to think about it. Stone hearth sounds nice will also check out our local reclamation yard.

TortoiseshellSpecs thanks I have a friend who raves about Chesney's but always thought they were beyond the budget. Will check them out.

Anyone have a sandstone or limestone surround and is so do you like them and are they hard wearing as marble?

Have you looked at local reclamation yards? There are always lots of fireplaces and they're much cheaper than new.

ruralmyth thanks I've looked in a couple of reclamation yards but they only had cast iron or wooden surrounds. I guess we can explore a bit further and maybe we can ask if they get any marble fire surrounds in to give us a call.

I'm not sure where you live but there are often ones near me (SW). Another option is to go to a stone mason and have one made. We had a lovely local stone one made to measure for £1K.

We've just had a Clearview pioneer woodburner fitted in our victorian fireplace and it's looks lovely. Super efficient too. My MIL has a gas fire and it's not very good TBH.

Hello, here at Victorian Society we would recommend having a look in some of your neighbours' houses. That way you can get a good idea of what the original fireplace would have been like. That should ensure your new fireplace matches the scale, and type of fireplace appropriate for the room.
