pros/cons of black honed slate tiles for kitchen/diner

saw some of these today and really liked them but wondering how they would fare in a kitchen/diner with two pre-schoolers.

how are they sealed, how often?
do they scratch?
will they withstand my destructive ds??

I will be watching with interest as we need to pick kitchen floor ASAP! We'd love slate tiles but like you, not sure of pros/cons

We looked at having slate work tops, which looked lovely, but the sample they sent was so easy to scratch.

Why don't you buy one, and see how it stands up to a bit of a beating?

I have slate in the kitchen and it doesn't scratch too much but shows up all the dirt and never really looks clean to me.

previous owners put it in and while it had a nice look when we viewed the house, it has never looked as well since. chairs have scratched it and three messy boys have dropped a lot of food that is always hard to get off.

It's a textured slate I'm talking about, by the way. I think that's the problem. I wouldn't recommend it, sorry.

I've just looked at the black riven slate tiles from mandarin stone website and ordering a sample. It's only oh, myself and dog at the moment (although possibly not for long!) so it needs to stand up to dog paws.

definitely not riven. wanted honed but after an hours investigation last night I quickly dismissed the idea. Sad
