Has anyone replaced JUST the glass in their windows?

We have recently moved into a new home. Front livingroom has bay windows with lead in them. DH dislikes it and i'd like shutters (had them in old house and loved them) but don't think they would work with lead. The window frames are fine, so wondering how big/costly of a job it would be to replace just the glass. 5 windows make up the bay.

We have had double glazed leaded glass put into original frame. The whole house has leaded windows, so the new glass for one door of the French windows had to match. It all depends on whether the glass is standard size, double glazed or single. It is difficult to advise, but one double glazed, leaded French door was £375. It had a cat flap in it though! Non leaded would be a lot cheaper. Why don't you ask a local glazing firm, or two, for quotes.

We had DS's bedroom window reglazed. It's double glazed in a pvc frame, about 1m x 1.1m and we paid £130 for it.

We had two double glazed windows with 'fake' leading redone due to misting (upvc frames). Cost 100 each. Friendly joiner who says you only really pay for the glass as it takes about 5 mins to actually do the job.

Are they wooden frames? Doubleglazed? I don't have a clue about double glazing but we've replaced single glazed glass in a bunch of wooden frames ourselves, it's grand fun.

No idea what it would cost to have a pro do it, but it's definitely doable and if you're remotely DIYish you could probably do it yourselves.

I'm not lying, either, of all the DIY stuff I've learned glazing is by far the easiest and most enjoyable. And new glass is SO SHINY!

Have just replaced one double glazed panel of our 5 panel box bay for £85. Was frankly gobsmacked it was so cheap. Wish I hadn't lived with the misted panel for so long.

I had a bloke from the local window company come round for the same sort of window and he sucked his teeth and quoted me a fortune saying he'd have to replace all the frames.

The builder doing the kitchen wandered over when he'd gone and said " hope you don't mind me interfering, that's rubbish love, just replace the windows. £75 each". He was right. He did a great job:)

Today actually!

Similar to you.. we moved house at Christmas and there were various panes of glass where thee double glazing seal had gone.
5 in fact. 3 in our big bay window at the front which has leadwork.

5 panels, and fiddling with the back door and fixing a broken hinge upstairs was £580. The panels are lead work though and the 3 big panels were toughen glass as the window is low off the ground so cost more.

Didn't take long to do at all.

thanks everyone for these replies. Thats soooo much cheaper than i thought. We;'d have 2 rooms actually so may be more like £600/700 but still i was expecting more. We have UPVC frames x

Just had the double glazed units in three of our windows replaced (they were nasty design obscured glass). Cost us £299, including two new handles. Really pleased with result.
