Suspect my neighbours are dodgy but no evidence. wwyd?

I have quite recently moved into a flat. I am ground floor and I have people above me, two men of about 50 odd.

Over recent weeks their behaviour has become more suspicious and I am starting to feel a little unsafe. It is just me and DD.

I have no evidence to prove it but I strongly suspect they are dealing drugs from their flat. They pretty much never leave apart from to walk to the corner and back, mainly at night. I know they are walking to the corner or next road as they come straight back. There are phones ringing all through the night too.
It is a conversion so you hear EVERYTHING.
I have been prompted to post this today as I am sitting here trying to work but they are shouting at each other upstairs and sound pretty drunk or out of it. Slurring etc. There was a load of banging about last night too.

When I saw one of them on the bus last week he told me that he 'works from the flat' selling antiques on ebay. I am into antiques so I asked him what kind of thing. He said he deals in watches and clocks. However I have literally never seen him bring anything in or out in two months or go to the post office ever.
I am in all day every day as work from here and sit in front window so I do know who is arriving and leaving plus you can hear everything as the front door is next to my window.
Additionally I checked ebay (I use it a lot anyway) and there are no listings of that description within a 5 mile radius. I am aware his seller account could be set up from a different address of course.

Should I do anything or say anything to anyone? If you were my landlady would you want to know this?

Or am I just meddling if I do?

Before they were just a bit annoying but now I find them a bit scary so am starting to feel a little uncomfortable especially with their shouting and incoherence late at night.

Both flats are rented by the way. Same owner

Hi - what is it about the phone calls you can hear that raises your suspicions?

I would be inclined, without proof of anything else, to keep a diary recording the noise nuisance as that is something concrete which is affecting you.

You could have a chat with the police on the non emergency number or ask to speak to someone from the neighbourhood policing team about your fears - given the poor soundproofing, I'd do that from elsewhere.

It sounds as though they could be heavy drinkers or drug users themselves and the trips out may be to the local off licence or to score? If it's spirits, the bottle or half bottle could easily be put in a coat pocket, so you wouldn't see them carrying bags of bottles. Drugs, would be concealed.

If they were dealing, they'd be getting lots of visitors at odd times. I agree it sounds odd and unsettling, but you need to be very careful not to accuse people of things like drug dealing when you have no proof. And also not to get too involved - leave that to the authorities.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I thought they might be dropping something off (or you are right, picking something up) is because none of the outings are long enough to get to any of our shops etc from where our place is.

What usually happens is they go, walk and then return within about a minute, maybe 90 seconds then come back. Really odd not even enough time to smoke a fag and they do that upstairs anyway so no reason I guess they would bother going outside.

Our downstairs neighbour was a heavy skunk user and sadly died of lung failure before reaching 50. Our life was affected by the horrid smell. He virtually never went out except to score out of a flat on. The street next door. He wasn t really a danger to us, except I worried he d fall asleep joint in mouth and the place would go up in flames. But his lifestyle was depressing to be around, even tangentially.
I think your suspicions are reasonable. There is a big drugs underworld out there. The question is do you put up or look at moving out. Are you renting?

justjuanmorebeer · 09/09/2014 22:13

Yes renting I am not moving no way. The more I think about this the more clues I see. It is depressing Sad

I have been around drug users before in my life so all the obvious stuff is there.

Do I tell landlady my concerns or leave it?

Phone 101 and report it . I have before . Expect to hear the helicopter checking with heat seek camera (if they have a grow). Then with a bit of luck their door will go in

I hope you resolve I have lived through similar situation brings your life quality down to zero. The police rely on you telling them in order to act

roneik · 09/09/2014 22:29

If they are dealing the police have the power to get them removed and the property sealed

justjuanmorebeer · 09/09/2014 22:45

So they are above my head right now, in their kitchen diner and one is moaning and saying "I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms, I wish I had a spliff".

Nice.

I knew I was right.

justjuanmorebeer · 09/09/2014 22:47

If I report them though they will know it was me. What then?

peggyundercrackers · 09/09/2014 22:54

Having a spliff hardly makes them drug dealers... Maybe they go out to pick up something for themselves? Not sure the police would do anything if you called and said the guy upstairs is smoking a joint.

justjuanmorebeer · 09/09/2014 22:58

When they leave the front door, it is only enough time to go to the end of the road and back or so, not enough to get to a shop or anywhere.

obvs a spliff is nothing to do something about but I think it is more than weed

Are you losing perspective a bit? What have they done to harm you?

Agrestic · 09/09/2014 23:18

You don't get withdrawal symptoms from cannabis

dustdragon · 09/09/2014 23:34

You should phone the police on 101 and report it. You also should tell the police that you feel unsafe. They will treat both issues seriously.

You can explain that you don't want the neighbours to know that you contacted them, and many forces now are happy to meet you somewhere away from your property or give you an appointment to go along to the police station so no police cars would come to your home. They really do take information seriously and make sure that you can't be identified in any way.

You shouldn't be scared to live in your own home,

roneik · 10/09/2014 22:47

It's not the weed smoking, it's when people are dealing with vehicles pulling up all hours. I have lived through it. Have a druggie live next door and see your life quality go down. See the thieving and lies and all the antisocial crap that comes with it. I lived in a flat 20 odd years ago and holding down a shift work job almost made made me suicidal. You cant know until you have lived it;. Anyway it does not stop at a spliff you get people on both that and really dangerous people on m kat and crack.

thornrose · 10/09/2014 23:01

I once had a drug dealer living next door. There were people shouting and whistling up at his flat in the early hours. His door was battered down by the police once every couple of months.

There were loud scary arguments in the early hours of the morning with the teens he had working for him.

In all fairness your neighbours sound like smokers not dealers.

justjuanmorebeer · 11/09/2014 12:30

I feel my messages may have been misunderstood.

I realise that you do not get withdrawal from cannabis! I suspect very heavy class a drug use and he was saying he wished he had a spliff to take the edge off.

They have done nothing to harm me but it is just me and a three year old so I dont think it is very pleasant to be around.

The constant ins and outs of the door going and phones ringing is just one of those things I suppose, what you get for living in a flat. Lots of people keep odd hours so there is nothing I can do about that bit.

It sounds horrible, poor you. I don't have any helpful suggestions, I'm afraid, just best wishes.

roneik · 20/09/2014 15:58

If it's hard drug usage / dealing the police now have the power to evict jointly with local council, be they tenant or owner. They issue injunctions too ,to prevent you getting come back. They always treat it so that the informant is anonymous

1moreRep · 20/09/2014 17:13

Ring the 101 or crime stoppers and tell them all your suspicians- times, descriptions of vehicles reg numbers etc, and let the police know/ do their job.

Then keep well out, don't (as I'm sure you wouldn't) get chatty with them/ show an interest in their activities. Also clearly number your flat door to avoid anyone mistaking your flat for theirs

I would get especially concerned from a health and safety point of view if you start getting a lot of damp/ the electric meter is getting fiddles and the house stinks of weed and is hot- as this would suggest a cannabis farm which puts you in danger from dodgy electrics etc.

Nancy66 · 20/09/2014 19:00

Doe they have lots of visitors at all hours? If not then more likely they are heavy users than dealers.

Dealers tend to deal from their properties as it's easier than going to 100s of customers and risk being caught in possession
