builder says he can plumb one in, temporarily at least. I'd been all set up to be traipsing up and down the stairs.

would I be mad to say no??

I just used paper plates and disposable cups etc.

Depends on how long you're going to be without a kitchen I guess!

RosinaCopper · 08/09/2014 13:09

When we had our kitchen done, we had the sink unit that had been taken out draining into a bucket, which was fine as long as I remembered to empty it regularly. That might be less hassle and expense and if you put something waterproof under the bucket in case of spillages might work?

time without sink is not clear yet, they're still discussing the schedule.....have all my paper plates lined up but he's talking running water from taps, not just a place to empty water from a pan

I do have a 4 and a 2 year old if that makes any difference

If the cost isn't too much then I would go for it. It will be extra messing around to have to go upstairs all the time - especially with kids of that age.

Get the sink. GET THE SINK! We did and it was a lifesaver (my two were 3 and newborn at the time).

They also plumbed in the washing machine in the lounge, which I thought was overkill but was also brilliant in the end.

Also consider if you haven't got an outside tap the builders will need somewhere to get water for endless brews to mix up mortar etc., and you don't want them traipsing up and down your stairs.

OddFodd · 09/09/2014 08:26

I have remembered since I posted that we moved out for most of the time we were without a kitchen Blush

So yes, I'd get the sink!

No I wouldn't. We are currently without a sink. Have been for 3 weeks and another 3 to go. My lounge is my adult space. Newly decorated at Christmas. Children watch TV in there. Thought of having potential for it all to get dripped on, have little leaks, temptation to make a coffee in there if that is where you'd fill up kettle. No, no, no. You'll end up having the expense of replacing carpet, decorating in there on top.

Having said that we have a downstairs loo in the understairs cupboard. Tap is so small and in such a small sink that you have to fill a jug to then fill the kettle etc but we do have running water downstairs. We do have the washing machine still plumbed in in the utility room (no running water in there though). Washing up in the bath. It is not pleasant!

Get the sink

I'm currently without a sink - although they have replumbed in my dishwasher. I just fill bottles of water for the kettle and I too am cooking on a camp stove in the living room. The only problem I have is having to drain pasta etc outside in the garden because obviously no sink to drain into.

RosinaCopper · 09/09/2014 09:35

Our sink had running cold water bodged on connected, so was used for all cooking needs. Possibly no less hassle than having one plumbed in properly, though. I think it'd be a nightmare to have to go upstairs for every drop of water though!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 09/09/2014 09:49

You'd be mad to say no, assuming that your living room is going to be decorated next.

We were without a sink for a week - it killed my back washing up in the sodding bath. [have v nice but very shallow bathroom sink so bugger all use to even fill the kettle]

Grin my lounge gave up being an adult space about, ooooh, 4 years ago!

have instructed them to go ahead and install. it just threw me as I'd been all set up for the harder option.

thanks all
