House rewire. Should we have some kind of Internet hardwire thing? Clueless.

We are about to start a total house renovation. Rewire, floors up, ceilings down kind of thing. It seems like an opportunity to put in some kind of Internet hardwire type of thing. With the teenage years looming the demand on our wifi will increase. Any ideas what we should put in? I have not a clue. Budget is limited. Thank you.

We have an ethernet wired system for the internet. And whilst in some parts of the house (really odd shape with lots of exterior walls in the middle of the inside of it) it is the only internet connection, the wifi is actually better and easier. Ethernet cable is expensive to buy. Plus it hasn't made any difference on speed/connection to have gone from ethernet to ethernet/wifi combination. Plus a lot of the wires are looking like they are going to need fixing up dating since they were installed. which is a right royal pita and expense.

Add to this I don't know one teenager that doesn't like to work from their bed/all over the house it might be a tad pointless to have fix internet points. Unless you are thinking of having fixed internet points so that you can observe the internet usage?

might depend on your intended use and how techy you are. we hard wired years ago and can, according to techy dh, do all sorts of things we wouldn't be able to wirelessly. I have no idea what he's talking about but he's been in the business for years

Anticyclone · 07/09/2014 17:44

I think 10 years ago it would have been worth it, but wireless is so fast now, and so many devices can only connect via WiFi (phones, iPads etc) that I don't think there would be much point in laying network cables these days.

If I were rewiring, I would consider having inbuilt USB charge points - i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODAwWDgwMA==/z/ZfEAAOSwFL9Tt8S1/$_12.JPG

You are right. So much is wireless now. Shall cross the idea off my list (I love things being crossed off my list! ). Liking the USB charge sockets.

You can add access points to improve a wifi signal if you need to )I have no idea how they work but it might be worth finding out?)

Anticyclone · 07/09/2014 20:30

Oh yes if your house is very large or has thick walls - meaning a single WiFi source signal would struggle to cover it all, then it may well be worth laying network cables to points where you could have multiple WiFi access points to allow wireless to be spread throughout the whole house. The network cables would all come back to a central point where the Internet line comes into the house.

I have network cables built in - actually very handy as we have awful wifi and it takes it to my office, so when I remote access work I do it through a wired connection which is much quicker, and also to DH's studio, which is in the garden so has no wifi. We also popped one in behind the TV for the sky box. They have made our our lives a bit easier!

We are ! I am putting cat 5 in every room just in case the TV etc goes computer based, that said this is our long term house and its totally empty of plaster and ceilings !
