Where to move that is commutable to Birmingham?

So this is very early days for us. We need to start looking at some places to move to that is commutable to Birmingham.

We currently live between Oxford and Cheltenham in a market town. We would like a similar set up with good primary schools and on a mainline rail link to Birmingham. We were thinking about Leamington Spa/Warwick, that sort of thing but we are wondering if there are any other places we should be looking at.

Will need at least 3 beds and budget is around £350k. Any suggestions please?

Many thanks.

Warwick and Leamington are expensive so not convinced that budget would be enough to be honest. Sutton Coldfield would be my suggestion.

Tiredemma · 06/09/2014 19:16

Sutton Coldfield
Lichfield

I live in Coventry- commuting to Birmingham would be very easy from here. About 20 minutes on a train or less. Areas are certainly very affordable but not sure it's exactly what you're looking for.
There are villages between Coventry and Birmingham from which the majority of people commute to Birmingham (the biggest probably being Balsall Common) but I really wouldn't like to comment on the price since I don't have much to do with them

Worcester?

CaulkheadUpNorth · 06/09/2014 19:25

Redditch
Droitwich
Henley
Stratford
Bromsgrove
Stoke
Solihull

Kenilworth

Warwick/Leamington - myton school

Wprcester

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 06/09/2014 19:35

Lichfield. Excellent schools (seriously, there are no bad ones), and 30 mins by train to Birmingham New Street.

Your £350k will buy you a 4 or 5 bed detached house.

stealthsquiggle · 06/09/2014 19:37

Worcester, or north to Droitwich/Bromsgrove would be more affordable and still commutable, although it does depend a lot where in Birmingham you are going.

kaymondo · 06/09/2014 19:40

I recommend the Lichfield side of Birmingham - you'll get a lot more for your money than Warwick and leamington but is still really nice, good schools, lots of nice villages but good trains/roads for commuting.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 06/09/2014 19:40

Something like this for example.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 06/09/2014 19:42

Narborough
Water Orton

Please the roads into Birmingham are very very busy.... I know because I spend a lot time commuting out of birmigham to various places which is due to my training and I also notice how so much busier it is to come into Birmingham than leave it! I would consider places in Birmingham or less than 15 miles!....
Worcester in particular is a difficult commute I've done that for 6 months and it depends really on where in Birmingham you need to be... How will you commute?
I too was looking for a place to buy to commute into and out of Birmingham and decided to live in Birmingham.... But I have no children at present so don't have that to think about but I would consider areas in Birmingham if I planned in driving for my commute

Areas of interest... Sutton Coldfield, Harborne, parts of Moseley, Water orton, even some parts near Wolverhampton side like tettenhall and penn are lovely, Lichfield of course, Bromsgrove... This is a selection all around Birmingham... I think these places are all within 15 miles commuteSmile

Worcestershire villages such as Barnt Green and Alvechurch are worth considering, as both are on the Cross City train line, they are also close enough to Birmingham that commuting by car is very doable.

Blackeyez09 · 07/09/2014 12:15

Yes how could I forget those places are very nice and if course Solihull...

AngieM2 · 07/09/2014 14:04

Worcester. For £350k you will get a decent sized 4 bed detached. Look at Warndon Villages. 5 mins to J6 of M5

MarianneSolong · 07/09/2014 14:13

I'd go much closer to Birmingham to cut down on the daily commute - both in terms of time and transport costs. Some areas only 5 or so miles from the centre, have a villagey feel, plenty of parks, good schools etc.

TwoTonTessie · 07/09/2014 14:20

Bromsgrove. Good schools, market town, nice countryside and around 20 mins by train to central Birmingham. You would get a nice house with your budget.

Tadla · 07/09/2014 16:22

I wouls ay lichfield or sutton coldfield. 350 k would get you a nice 3 bed detached.

LocalEditorSolihull · 07/09/2014 16:34

Solihull (lots of lovely villages and excellent schools all over)

Stratford upon Avon
Warwick (really lovely towns but budget would be stretched probably)

Husband used to commute in from north Warwickshire where your budget would get you far, but didn't particularly love being out there.

Bromsgrove is good value and there are beautiful bits near the Lickey hills.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 07/09/2014 16:39

Hereford, Ledbury, Malvern all on a good train line and all infinitely nicer than Bromsgrove.

Didiusfalco · 07/09/2014 16:40

Sannta really? Are the schools in Lichfield that good? Are there any secondaries that you would particularly recommend - I've been thinking about moving there for a while now.

LilRedWG · 07/09/2014 16:42

Bromsgrove is nice.

FeathersMcGraw · 07/09/2014 16:43

I live just outside Ashby de le Zouch and drive to work near Birmingham Airport (2 junctions of the M42). Tamworth station is only 20 mins drive away with a link to Birmingham New St. Excellent primary & secondary schools, and the surrounding villages are lovely. £350k would get a fairly substantial detached house around here :)

Also have the National Forest on your doorstep with loads of trails, walks, bike centres etc.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 07/09/2014 17:46

It wasn't 15 years ago when I lived there. Walking by the canal was nice, Bromsgrove wasn't very inspiring.

Although, sadly the new shopping centre has done nothing for the middle of Hereford too.

catgirl80 · 07/09/2014 19:37

Shrewsbury. Lovely town and rural area. Very good value and excellent schools . About 50 mins from birmingham by train
