How do you Use your conservatory?

I have just moved to a house with a large conservatory- no furniture in it yet- thing is I'm not sure how best to use the space.
How do you use yours? I do love plants but don't want it to become a greenhouse, do you have sofa and chairs and coffee table?
My ex neighbour used it for her OHs pool table and as an ironing room which seems a waste.

I have never had a conservatory before and not quite sure how to use the space.

Mine is where the cats live. I'm hoping to make it into a second reception room/playroom. It will have a sofa, and book shelves full of lovely books and toys.

It can get quite cold in the winter and boiling in the summer. I wouldn't build one myself tbh.

We use ours as a dining room and have a large table in it for working at - I do sewing, dd does homework, dh marks work.

It's very well used from about 4 - 7.30

I also take my morning coffee there and my afternoon tea

Fevertree · 05/09/2014 22:57

Ours is a dining room, we are lucky enough to have space for a large table and 12 chairs, a book case, a dresser and a desk. It's my favourite room. We're considering getting rid of the desk and putting a small sofa there but the sofa would have it's back against the outside wall so not sure... Hmm.

Mine is a playroom with sofa, book shelves, toys, tv and the guinea pigs. I can't wait for the day that it is lovely and uncluttered. Ours is used every day all year round. It's nice and bright and airy.

I'd love to do this, it sounds v grand!

pegster · 05/09/2014 23:01

Dining room here too, gives us a much bigger space than what is supposed to be the dining area in the house (which is now a play area)

combust22 · 05/09/2014 23:01

Interesting ideas, keep em coming. We already have a dining room, and the kids are too old for a playroom. Maybe i shoild get a sofa and chairs and see how it develops.

Half dining room, half home gym. Grin

imnottoofussed · 05/09/2014 23:19

Ours has a corner patio sofa type thing you know one of those rattan type with cream upholstery, coffee table, cream ikea love seat, okra billy book case, spare drinks we buy in bulk (water, coke etc), mini fridge and other random things like my exercise bike, dd's bike, clothes airer, laundry basket, washer and dryer in the built in cupboard. It's very hot in the summer and freezing in winter even though it has a huge radiator in. Lovely on a normal bright day though as it gets just warm enough to curl up on the sofa with a book and cup of tea!

combust22 · 05/09/2014 23:23

I'm worrid that it will get very cold in winter. It's North facing, but an open aspect so lots of light( so far) from the East and West and it has a large radiator.

I don't 'get' them! I mean why? Just why? If you need another room, build another room, a proper room, not just a glass box that's too bloody hot in summer and too sodding cold in the winter? They almost always ruin the room they are adjoining too... whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

combust22 · 05/09/2014 23:26

I don't know latte- I would have just built another room too. Cheaper than an extension maybe?

PenisesAreNotPink · 05/09/2014 23:26

Mines is NorthEast facing so only blisteringly hot when it's actually boiling outside anyway - it's perfect for the vast majority of the year

It wouldn't be nice if it was south facing

combust22 · 05/09/2014 23:27

penises- is it very cold in winter?

Latte is right. We have one too. Its been a dining room, an office, a playroom, a junk room. Right now its temporarily housing a sick rabbit. But because the temps are extreme, its hard to know what to use it for. Wish we had built a room instead. Sorry, no help whatsoever.

DancingDinosaur · 05/09/2014 23:29

Ours is north facing. Utterly freezing in winter, boiling in summer.

DancingDinosaur · 05/09/2014 23:30

We have large radiator too.

combust22 · 05/09/2014 23:31

Bugger- so not looking good then. Pity, it's such a beautiful room, 20ft x 20ft.

PenisesAreNotPink · 05/09/2014 23:31

I'm in the southeast so five minutes of sun and it's warm.

If I heat it, I only need to do it for 10 minutes as it's got thermal gas thingy in the glazing.

Notso · 05/09/2014 23:32

Yes Latte
Nearly everyone I know has one, they all seem to fall into one of the following categories;
Playroom/teen den,
Cane furniture no one sits on and mostly used for laundry/storing stuff,
Dining room that only gets used at Christmas.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 05/09/2014 23:33

combust - cheaper maybe, value for money most certainly not - it's a lot of money for a room most people can't/don't use! Maybe it's something to do with planning permission or regs?!

Maybe if they face the perfect direction they're 'OK' but in 46 years I've not met one yet.

I wouldn't keep pets in them either - the temperatures are too extreme.

PenisesAreNotPink · 05/09/2014 23:33

20 by. 20 is massive - that's a great size for big parties.

Even if you don't use it year round it will be great for a large part of the year

DancingDinosaur · 05/09/2014 23:34

A friend of a friend put a ceiling in theirs and turned it into a proper room. I've not seen it, but friend says its pretty good. Maybe I should try that.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 05/09/2014 23:36

DD does it spoil any other room? The garden? A view?

ie what would you gain if you tore it down?

DancingDinosaur · 05/09/2014 23:56

Nothing to be gained by tearing it down. I'd lose my junk room. But if its possible to turn it into an all year round room by putting in a ceiling, then obviously lots to be gained. (Not that I have physically seen this myself). I can't really imagine what that would look like, maybe quite ugly.
