We're renovating our new house and have chosen colours for all the walls. It's a 1930s house so has lots of woodwork (original doors, panelled staircase, picture rails, big skirting boards etc) which we're busy stripping about 300 layers of white gloss from (fun!!) ready to repaint.

We definitely don't want to repaint with gloss so are thinking satinwood is the way to go but what colour? I'm quite keen to have something other than pure brilliant white, like a slightly off-white. Dulux Timeless of White Jasmine?? Or would large areas of woodwork like the doors not look quite right if they were anything other than pure white?? Maybe there's a reason most people go for pbw so maybe it is the sensible option. Hmmmm......

satinwood does not get as grubby as eggshell.

PBW tends to yellow if (1) it is oil-based low VOC and (2) it is not exposed to any sunlight. However over the last 5 years or so, formulae of low VOC paint have been improved to reduce yellowing.

Water paint does not yellow (though IMO it is less durable and less glossy)

In my last house I painted all the woodwork with ivory cream satinwood (dulux I think) and it looked lovely and was v easy to keep clean.

For some reason, in this house, I chose to paint the woodwork in Farrow & Ball (matt finish) and it's really really crap. It's constantly dirty and has rubbed off in some places where I've had to repeatedly rub it clean.

I've used Dulux Satinwood in White Cotton. Works well and wipes clean ok. It's been a year so no time for yellowing etc but should be ok

Thank you for the replies. Pleased that the idea of not using pbw hasn't been met with gasps of horror :-) And sounds like dulux satinwood will be a good choice, just need to choose a shade of white/cream now. Annoyingly they don't seem to do satinwood in tester pots!

I have recently fallen in love with a white satin-finish water-borne paint by Sikkens. It is called Satura Rubbol BL and it has a lovely mid sheen satin finish.
Have you considered perhaps painting the skirting boards and door frames white and the doors a slightly darker shade, such as Dulux's Egyptian Cotton? That might look more interesting than having it all in one colour.
