Conservatory as a bedroom??

We have a really large downstairs (6 rooms) but only 3 bedrooms upstairs. The 3 bedrooms are large but we really need a 4 bed as I have 3dcs and all really are getting to the age where they need their own room. Can't afford extension or loft conversion but we have a large conservatory that we don't use much (currently a 2nd lounge). My idea is to use it as my bedroom so dcs can have their own rooms, there are cealing fans and radiators so not worried about hot and cold but just a bit worried this is a really stupid idea.

Anyone else done this? Or any pros or cons you can think of.

If you have 6 rooms downstairs why would you use one if these as a bedroom? Confused

You'd use up an awful lot of energy trying to keep a conservatory warm overnight in winter. We have radiators in our conservatory but it's more a keeping it warm on a spring evening job than actual heating. I'd use an inside room.

It will be fine in winter but in summer it will be very light

I've slept in ours , it was fine. In fact in summer I left the french doors open when it was hot and it was blissful.

Because we have the lounge. Dining room, kitchen and utility room. Can't really use these and you have to go through lounge and dining to get to the kitchen. The other 2 rooms are downstairs bathroom and playroom. The playroom won't fit a double bed plus furniture in it.

Use conservatory as dining room?

Expensive to heat if very very cold winter (minus degrees). Lots of windows to cover for privacy. If it is off the kitchen you would be disturbed by people in three late and early ( when kids teenagers).

Lastly it just sounds wrong.

I say try it and see how it goes. You'll get used to the light, and I think it will be nice to wake up and see the garden.

Probably not a good idea is it! It's a south facing garden so will be really light when sun comes up. Didn't think about daylight. Think I will have to split the biggest bedroom to make 2 small rooms

Well it wouldn't be my first choice. Extremes of temperature and light/soundproofing being the major problems.

Rain - too noisy
Winter - too cold
Summer - too light
Getting the roof covered and blackout blinds - very expensive
Cost of heating and insulation - very expensive

Why can't you use the playroom as a bedroom for one of the children? Or turn the dining room into a bedroom?

Would a high sleeper double bed fit in the play room? Then you could fit a desk/storage underneath it.

Im a bit nervous about putting oldest ds downstairs in the playroom. Although this would be ideal. He is nearly 8 but don't like the idea of him sleeping downstairs whilst we are all upstairs.

Gosh 8! I thought you were talking mid teens, you have a while to go before they 'need' their own room...I'd let them struggle on sharing

Auch they'll be grand sharing for a while longer then. Wait another year or two and then stick DS in the playroom with a high sleeper. Sleeping in a conservatory just won't work, unless you're a very deep sleeper who doesn't mind temperature extremes.

Use the conservatory as a playroom (our DC use ours on all but the very hottest and very coldest days of the year), and give one of your DC the playroom. Ta Da! Problem solved. I claim my prize.

FWIW is a DC sleeping downstairs any different from one of your DC sleeping upstairs if you had done a loft conversion?

We have a sofa bed in our conservatory and it's fine for the odd night or two even in the winter - last time we slept in there was February and it actually got too warm with the heater on and thick duvet. But I wouldn't want to be sleeping out there in heavy rain or in the summer when it's light so early.

Sounds like a single high sleeper or similar in the playroom would be a better idea in the long run.

Make the dining room your bedroom and the conservatory the dining room.
