Using kitchen cabinets in living room

MrsAlwaysRight · 27/08/2014 20:25

Has anyone ever used kitchen cabinets as fitted cupboards in their living room? I want to get some cupboards built in and have shelves above but was wondering if this is a viable option or if it will just look like I have randomly used kitchen cupboards! Grin

I've been thinking the same thing this week! I don't see why not really. What about the Besta range by Ikea - you can play about with their planner for them and add doors and legs. They might work - could use a different worktop.

If you look on Houzz there's an ideabook about doing this. It looks really good. The issue will be the kick boards, that's what will make it look like kitchen units. you'll need custom feet cutting IMO.

MrsAlwaysRight · 27/08/2014 21:21

Yay it's not a totally crazy idea then! Off to check out Houzz now - thanks for the suggestion atticusclaw Smile

I'm trying to post the link but it won't work. The ideabook I was thinking of is called "how to create your own semi custom media wall". It's actually ikea hemnes units rather than kitchen cabinets though.

MrsAlwaysRight · 27/08/2014 21:38

Thanks for that - just been searching and was struggling to find it, will take another look now Smile

NerfHerder · 27/08/2014 21:43

look on pinterest- and search 'ikea hack' or somesuch.

MrsAlwaysRight · 27/08/2014 21:45

or type in (pinterest) 'ikea credenza' also!

Kitchen cabinets are generally a bit deep compared to living room ones?

happylittlevegemites · 30/08/2014 23:39

We had kitchen cabinets as fitted wardrobes! And also in the bathroom. I loved them. And they were (particularly compared to bathroom cupboards) cheaper. Kitchen cupboards come in a variety of different depths.

lottiefenwick · 31/08/2014 00:32

Try Howdens kitchen wall cupboards. They sell them with modification kits to provide bathroom cabinetry at a fraction of the cost. They are much shallower than base cabinets. You can use any of their door styles so i'm sure one would suit... You might need to borrow a trade card from someone though unless you have a registered business though!

burnishedsilver · 31/08/2014 03:36

You can use kitchen wall units at floor level for a shallower, less kitcheny, look

MrsAlwaysRight · 31/08/2014 19:35

Thanks for all the replies. We have previously used kitchen cabinets in the bathroom and it looks fine.

My friends DH would be able to get them at trade price for us - every little helps Grin

I've had a look on Pinterest and have seen quite a few examples of Ikea kitchen units being used in living rooms that look pretty good, so I think wall cupboards used at floor level could be an affordable option.

Where can I find kitchen units used in a living room as sideboards on Houzz

PigletJohn · 14/02/2021 13:39

They look better with a chrome or painted metal leg. You will have buy a top. Kitchen worktops are usually 600mm deep but see if you can use a narrower size. The top will be most on view so choose carefully. It is possible to use varnished wood made from flooring packs.

HotChoc10 · 14/02/2021 13:51

I think the Ikea Ivar units would work well for this!

HumourReplacementTherapy · 14/02/2021 15:01

@Anne32 not sure about Houzz (thread is 7 years old) but you'll find loads of ideas on insta and Pinterest
Follow #ikeahack too for ideas on how to make cabinets for alcoves etc. Some excellent ones on Instagram.
