Moving home - disconnecting the washing machine

Hello,

Neither I nor OH very handy, so wondering if we need a plumber to disconnect & reconnect our washing machine, vented tumble drier and dishwasher or if it is easy enough with a bit of watching youtube?

Basically worried about flooding old or new homes in the process!

Thanks!

You need to be able to turn off the water supply connected to the washing machine and dishwasher, there may be a lever or a valve you turn with a screwdriver (do look on youtube)

PigletJohn · 25/08/2014 23:30

typical valve

turn the lever so it is across (lot in line with) the pipe

then slowly unscrew the plastic nut on the appliance hose. If it drips or leaks, do it back up and call a plumber.

(NOT in line with)

Swift answers! Thank you.

What about at the other end - It's going to be more complicated isn't it?
Especially tumble drier

if there was previously a washing machine, you screw the plastic nut onto the end of the valve.

If your tumble drier has a vent hose, you will need a 105mm hole in the wall. If there is not already one, you or a small builder can get a core drill from a tool hire shop, and fit a plastic duct through the wall.

His might sound really stupid, but surely the tumble dryer just plugs into the mains? It doesn't have a water supply ...

PigletJohn · 25/08/2014 23:48

where does the steam go?

wowfudge · 25/08/2014 23:50

Depends whether there is a proper vent for the hose to go into or not. But no, not difficult. Just make sure the hoses of the washing machine are properly connected before you turn the tap on to let water flow to the machine.

Do you by any chance still have the transit bolts for your washing machine? They are the bolts that fit in the back of the machine which you have to remove before you can use it. If you do, refit them before you move because they stop the drum moving around when the machine is in transit and can prevent damage to the inside of it.

AnythingNotEverything · 26/08/2014 07:14

Ah. We've always had a condenser dryer so no vent.

If you can turn mains water off at stopcock.
when you turn the valve to cut the water to the pipes, there will still be some water in the pipe, not much - a cupful or two- so be expecting 'some' water to come out.
tumble drier is also v simple, a plug in the wall socket and a vent pipe.

The biggest problem with washing machine moving is the sheer weight of the thing.

When reconnecting the washer the drain pipe -grey one- it needs to go up then down into the drain that goes out through the wall.
Like so

otherwise it will cause a perpeptual drain cycle.

If you're paying for a full service removal company they will probably do it for you (for a fee).

specialsubject · 27/08/2014 15:48

seconded - find those transit bolts. Machine may not survive the move without it. And will DEFINITELY not survive if you don't remove them before use.

tumble drier - one plug, and the hose.
dishwasher - one plug, and the hose.

water hoses ALWAYS spill water so have a bowl handy. Also lots of packing tape to fix them to the machine.

PigletJohn · 27/08/2014 15:53

transit bolts, and the diagram of where they go, can be put in a bag tied to the back of the machine. If you are lucky, the person who installed it did that.

If not, and you manage to find them, do it next time.

It's possible you can order a set of bolts from the manufacturer's website Spares page.
