How much to get a driveway/hardstand done?

We aren't in a mega expensive area so not SE prices.

The house we are buying has a good size front garden, plenty enough to dig it out and put in a hardstand/driveway for 2 cars. Shouldn't be a problem for planning as the house 2 doors up has had it done.

I don't want gravel. Concrete, tarmac or brick preferably but no idea what the differences are in prices.

Does anyone have any idea how much these things cost? I haven't the foggiest tbh.

I just had mine tarmaced on the cheap and pd £4k. We were quoted up to £13k for a brick one.

Took them 1.5 days and they did a reasonable job

CrapBag · 27/08/2014 22:07

Definitely not a brick one then!

4k is still more than I was thinking. Bugger. Wanted it but the survey has picked up that he roof needs doing in a few years so can't afford 4k on something that isn't essential.

Anyone else get anything cheaper? (Hopeful) Wink

I'm lurking with interest?

Has anyone had one of those "inprint" type drives done. Tey look like block paving/brick but are actually patterned concrete. Any good? Expensive?

DurhamDurham · 28/08/2014 08:30

The neighbours across the road from us have that concrete done which looks like bricks. I was fascinated to watch them do it. It does look good but what they have found is that it is very sloppy when it's wet, I think it's to do with the coating/sealant they put on the concrete to give it a good finish. I wouldn't have it done for this reason......but then I'm in the NE where it rains quite a bit Grin

Ahem slippy not sloppy.

Tarmac or gravel is probably the cheaper option. Had my previous driveway done in tarmac for three cars for around £2000, 4 years ago though there wasn't much garden to dig up.

nagynolonger · 28/08/2014 08:39

We paid £3000 six years ago. Tarmac and enough space for 5/6 cars. It took them 2 days to do and we couldn't use the drive for 3/4 days afterwards.

atticusclaw · 28/08/2014 08:39

Gravel will be the cheapest option. You need to speak to the planning department since people paving over their gardens is causing flooding issues.

£4k-£6k is a lot of money but sounds about right for a normal sized driveway to fit two cars. I have had a quote for my very large driveway to be resurfaced - £19k

You need to factor in the cost of the dropped kerb as well. Round here the council charges £1k for their men to come and drop the kerb, and you don't have a choice over it.
