Installing a shower - is this possible? rough cost/time?

This will be a long story (sorry!)

I currently have no shower in my bathroom. This is somewhat inconvenient - my compromise is the absence of shower is to use the one at the gym (no good if I fancy a shower in the early hours/late at night!) My lovely bf will only stay at mine infrequently because he hates baths - when he stays over has to get up extra early to go home first and shower at his before work). This is far from ideal, so I really need a proper solution.

Unfortunately there's no cheap interim fix, as my bath tap is a sort of waterfall mixer type thing so I can't even get one of those cheapo attachments as a temp measure!

I have a 'space' in my bathroom for a shower. Said space is marine ply boarded, has a drain, and basic hot/cold pipes but needs tiling. The original plan (when Ex started and half finished the bathroom) was that because it is a narrow, cubicle shaped space, we would tile walls and floor and have a lip/step up/down - so that the water didn't end up all over the rest of the floor.

Have had a few tradesmen round to look at it. All said I can't tile the floor as 'it will leak'. One said I would need a specially made shower tray, because the space is narrow and the drain is in one corner and that would cost £500 alone. Another quoted £2000 for the job (I already have all the tiles and the shower). A third said I wouldn't get a tray to fit, and it 'wasn't worth' trying to put a shower in the space because it would be too narrow to be useable Hmm

So...any thoughts/words of wisdom? Does it sound like it IS possible, and if so, how much should I be expecting to pay?

I think I am reading it correctly. How about a shower screen and a new mixer tap? Should be fairly cheap and use the existing bath.

How is your hot water provided? Combi or conventional boiler? Couldn't you either get a shower tap attachment over the bath or fit an electric shower over the bath?

What are the dimensions?

Install an electric shower over the bath

We had a separate toilet that dh turned into a shower room. It is narrower than a standard shower tray but we got the right size plus enclosure for less than £500. Dh fitted it although did have to chisel into the wall. It's a high quality ceramic tray. I guess it depends how handy you are, an electric shower over the bath is probably the simplest solution.

Would it not be easier to install a separate shower over the bath, or change the bath taps?

What are the dimensions of the space?
