DIY Emergency!!

Help!! I have a bathroom windowsill that had a tiny area where the paint had cracked. In a moment of insanity, I decided that I could easily re-paint the window sill. I have no DIY skills whatsoever. I grabbed a chisel and started removing paint. So far I've removed a pretty small area of paint. The bare wood underneath now has lots of chunks missing where I think I've chiselled too deeply. I've sandpapered the area so now looks better.

Am I doing the right thing? Can anyone tell me what I need to do now??
I've GOT to have this sorted by tomorrow night. I do have some free time tomorrow...please tell me this job can be done in a day.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

:-)

If you're going to gloss it you'll need to sand all of it down. Is it all one level? If not you'll need some wood filler or polyfiller to fill the gap.

The alternative is to buy some plastic fascia board (what usually goes under the eaves of the house) and cut to size - glue to windowsill, hey presto a nice shiny, easy to clean/maintain windowsill Smile

Whatever you do, stop chiselling. That is like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

I dont know why you starting chipping off paint. I would have just sanded it and then painted on top of the existing paint

Thank you!! OK-I've stopped chiselling. It looks an absolute mess now. The area I've chiselled isn't actually that big. Like the idea of the plastic fascia board. Will buy some tomorrow. So I just need a saw and special glue?? I'll pop to B&Q in morning.

The reason I chiselled window sill? I googled 'how to re-paint a bathroom window sill' and tried to copy first entry I saw. Think I should have done a little more research...

Thanks everyone!

Use a glue like no more nails, and get some window sealant to finish it off. Good luck!

Oh lord!!!

Yes to filler!!

Yes to covering it with PVCu

Perhaps at the risk of removing an arm whilst cutting said plastic, you could simply fill the hole, wait 24hrs got it to dry, give the whole sill a damn good sand & then gloss it!

Ps where on earth did you find a chisel???

Re: 24 hrs to dry that's probably a bit long, wait a couple of hours and you'll be fine.
Re paint and voila job done!!!
