Massive windows in our new sixties house - what kind of blinds/curtains?

We are about to move into a sixties house, with the typical large windows.

The bedrooms are my main worry. I need to cut the light as I have small children. In our current home I have wooden blinds in the recess and then roman blinds with blackout lining outside of the recess.

One of the kids bedroom the window is about 3mx1.3m I think roman or wood will be way too heavy to pull up. Any other ideas please?

60s house here with huge windows too!

My DS's bedroom with is the biggest at 2.8m by 1.3m. He has curtains with blackout linings from John Lewis with a blackout Groblind behind on the part nearest his bed. His room faces west so gets the sun in the evening but this has worked fine this summer.

I got a normal and a wide pair of curtains from John Lewis on sewed them together. That was £120 instead of £300+ to get them made. We did have just one wide pair from Dunelm previously but the window was too big and the curtains didn't cover it properly.

I would love wooden blinds for our window but at 2.5m wide I think I would have to get 2 separate ones which I'm not so keen on the look of.

Hiya

Ours was built in 1953 and all bedrooms have plus 3m windows (also both ends of the lounge)

We have black out roller blinds upstairs and vertical blinds downstairs. Avaliable online, I can't remember the website but a goodle search should fine some.

Thanks so much. I don't really like curtains but prefer a paired down simple look. I think it will have to be a huge roller blind. I will try and find someone making them that size...

Why not vertical blinds?

Lelivre · 17/08/2014 18:38

I don't think I like them and, do they block the light? I've only seen translucent ones.

You can get blackout ones in a range of colours from various places like this.

IMO they can look really effective, especially of the edges are softened with a lighter curtain.

When you say 3m x 1.3m, is that a horizontal or a vertical window?

I think the obvious answer if it's horizontal, is to get blinds to fit with the sections of glass - if there are any - so two or three roman/wooden blinds (or thin slatted (mini) PVC venetian blinds would be my preference for lightness of operation and low intrusiveness) side by side so that you could raise or lower just one or two if you wanted to.

If there is just one long sheet of glass without wooden divisions, then you can divide it up however you like with blinds. There will probably be small gaps where the light comes in between them, but it is probably the best option with a window of this scale.

I hate vertical blinds (sorry!) as they remind me of offices but the pink one in that picture looks quite pretty.

Bit like this.

I could have written this post myself! We've just moved into a 1964 house with 3m windows. The sun comes up at the front of the house where there are 2 bedrooms so we definitely need some kind of blackout option there or else we're all waking up at 5am... But we also sleep with our windows open in all but the depths of winter and I'm thinking that blackout roller blinds (interim option until I decide what to do with dressing the window full stop - see below). Does anyone have any experience of recessed blackout rollers and what the airflow is like with them down...? I'm presuming they keep the breeze out also?

Also, I'm having a net-curtain nightmare: the old owner left us her very frilly and flowery net curtains and although I hate these particular ones, I'm wondering if I might replace them with voiles or a more modern looking net (I NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVEN CONSIDER NETS. WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ME??). Downstairs I'm not TOO worried about privacy - if anyone can be bothered to stand and peer into our living room, they're welcome to whatever sights greet them - but in our bedroom particularly with its 3m window I want to protect the neighbours from the nightmare vision that is 'me just out of the shower.' Can anyone point me to a Pinterest board or a website with inspiration for how to dress 60s windows in a modern way...?

So I have just remembered in the states they have foam wood blinds that look like painted wood. Wondering if they are light enough to have for a wide window.

Ours are long on the horizontal. Well vertical too downstairs but the bedrooms are the main worry.

The taped wooden blinds are very sixties in style (if madmen is anything to go by) I'm going to make some enquiries, see what sizes are the maximum.

Manyhats - when I was in Canada I saw a lot of white black out lining floor to ceiling curtains with white voile on a separate rail right behind. They would go the full width of the wall with the window and the black out linings would be pulled back in the day.

They looked quite nice. I just don't want curtains at all myself, I'm after some kind of blind I think.

How about shutters? John Lewis and various others do them. Pretty simple and clean looking and good for blackout

Lelivre · 18/08/2014 20:09

I did think of it but I don't think it will look right. Plus they are full width of the room in some of the rooms with nowhere to fold them back without blocking the window itself.

Manyhatson, BRUME does great window film, can get it made to measure if standard sizes don't apply.. Will save you from net curtainage.

MummytoMog · 18/08/2014 23:56

Ikea panel curtains. Just need a track and I think they're so lovely. If we had big windows, I'd have them all over the place.

Lelivre · 19/08/2014 13:36

Mummymog-thanks I will take a look :)

I have just had Roman blinds made for our barn conversion windows - can't remember exact measurements but they are about 2.95 metres wide by 2 metres long (and I needed 4!). They have a very discreet but strong headrail with geared metal winding mechanism, so despite being heavy, are easy to let up and down. I chose very good value fabric, and had them lined (not with blackout though) but the expensive bit was the headrails, and fitting. They were made up for me via a local home furnishing shop. It was not cheap, but they form an amazing feature, as the windows are stacked one on top of each other in pairs, either side of our double height dining room, so I was happy to pay the price...

Thanks - That is good to know and it does sound fantastic!
