Gas and water on one wall - how deep to make worktop so pipes etc have room ? (Ikea)

Hi all

I realise Ikea doesn't have access panels in the cabinets so the pipes etc in British kitchens may be a challenge - and I gather from mumsnet a cunning plan to have gas and water on one wall and use an extra deep countertop ... Thus also gaining deep workspace. Sounds good!

Two questions though

  • thoughts on how much extra depth? Thinking 6.5 more than the cabinets ... (Obvious answer is 'look' but can't disassemble them yet and need to order worktop ... Er).
  • does doing this make attaching the cabinets to wall a problem? Is that what is supposed to happen?

Just run the pipes at floor level. It's really not a problem. Having the cupboards stick out would just involve using battens to build out so you could attach the cupboards, but I wouldn't arse about with that. We had no trouble at all having our gas hob connected and I didn't find the plumbing tricky at all.
