What's Loughborough like?

Rhianna1980 · 11/08/2014 14:32

We would like to relocate from NW in the next year or so to the midlands to be nearer my in laws as FIL has few medical problems and DH wants to be nearer. I'm looking at potential areas...so what's L'boro like? Anyone currently living there? Many thanks!

Loughborough itself isn't that lovely, but there are some stunningly beautiful villages outside.

Will PM you later.

vestandknickers · 11/08/2014 18:53

Loughborough is minging but there are some nice towns and villages quite close.

ElleDubloo · 11/08/2014 20:29

I grew up in Loughborough and loved it - I'm frankly shocked at the above posts! Some of it is a bit dingy, but there are lots of lovely parts! Our family home is in Nanpantan, a suburb in the west, and it's very peaceful, surrounded by fields, with nice but modest houses.

However there's a gorgeous village nearby called Quorn, with large old houses, big gardens and quaint pubs. If I was relocating back to the East Midlands and had a decent budget I'd probably buy in Quorn.

Rhianna1980 · 11/08/2014 20:53

Thanks for all your messages Thanks
We went to oakham and stamford last weekend and loved the area. People there are extremely lovely and both towns felt safe and homely. My worry is that they might be too rural for me. It's one thing visiting and another thing living there. We live about 20 min from Manchester . I like the closeness of a hospital (just in case) and decent schools.
So we are considering and researching the East Midlands area at the moment.
We aren't moving anytime soon but it's worth starting to do a research now as it's a big thing .

I wonder if Nottingham/west Bridgford might suit your requirements better than l'boro?

sleepdodger · 11/08/2014 21:25

Quorn is lovely near Loughborough
QMC at notts, Leicester and walsgrave all massive hospitals
It depends on budget etc

amyhamster · 11/08/2014 21:29

If I had the cash I'd go for West Bridgford / Gamston in Nottingham
Good schools, 1 mile from Nottingham which is great for shops, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, uni's, FE colleges
Close to the countryside
1 hour from Peak District
1 hour 40 minutes to London by train

I grew up in loughborough and hated it Smile. Have now relocated to Bristol. However there are some lovely areas nearby, burton on the wolds, woodhouse eves, belton, long Whatton, diseworth, quorn...

West bridgford is lovely, and there's so much more to do in Nottingham than loughborough!

Rhianna1980 · 12/08/2014 09:00

Thanks for your replies :) I will have a look at the areas suggested. Xx

It's a dump!
Try the outlying villages, diseworth, belton, long whatton, rempstpne etc.

ZaraW · 12/08/2014 15:30

West Bridgford is nice but expensive. You can get a lot more for your money in Bramcote or Beeston. Ruddington is a nice village.

MissMilliment · 12/08/2014 15:40

Loughborough is not IMHO a dump. It has good and bad bits like any middle-sized market town. There are lots of good areas to live in, the town centre is ok for basics and is improving, there's a lovely park in the town, you're near Leicester and Nottingham and the M1 if you need to go farther afield, loads of gorgeous countryside nearby, and there are plenty of good schools - state and private, whichever is your bag.

It's not a stand-out brilliant must-live-in-at-any-cost place, but it's pretty good I think, if you want to live in a town rather than a village or city. As for villages, Quorn is lovely, and there are some nice villages between Loughborough and Nottingham too.

Sicaq · 12/08/2014 15:51

It's another "dump" vote from me. Dirty and has a heavy drinking thuggish culture. But try Rothley or Quorn nearby, and Leicester has a really nice community with loads if cultural things and decent shops.

MissMilliment · 12/08/2014 15:55

I'm obviously living in a completely different Loughborough from everyone else Grin.
OP, feel free to pm me if you want to ask anything more specific.

nipersvest · 12/08/2014 15:58

we are in oakham, and also relocated here from the north west! (grew up in formby). we love it here. dh works in loughborough and it would not have been our first choice to move to. stamford is more expensive than oakham. yes it is rural, but close enough to both leicester and peterborough for things like hospitals, schools here are good too.

Beeston? Good transport links. I live in Leicester and know it inside out so happy to provide info on it if needed. 66 min on train to London. Quicker than much of the south but shhh nobody realises.

Not my side but I'd love to live in Quorn, Mountsorrel or Rothley. So nice.

Otherwise, Market Harborough? Have you got children? I have friends saying it is a great place to bring up kids. Ooh or Kibworth is nice too. Or Great Glen.

South Leicestershire villiages close to city = Bushby, Thurnby, Tilton, Stoughton.

Buy me a house in any of these places I'd be happy.

Rhianna1980 · 13/08/2014 11:23

Thanks again for all the info. You are very helpful x

Yea, main thing is decent schools. So that will be my priority when picking the area:) this is my research now for the areas suggested on here.

I'm from Leicester but have very "naice" family in Loughborough so wouldn't consider it a dump at all!! But it's very very studenty and as it's quite small the students do seem to take over during freshers but I've yet to meet one who wasn't fairly polite and nice and it's not as though freshers takes place in the suburbs!!
Lots of lovely villages north of Leicester though, mountsorrell, mark field, anstey, rothely.
Plenty of nice areas in and around Leicester generally!!
Hth

LizardBreath · 13/08/2014 11:42

Stamford is lovely! Oakham nice too but not as big. I'm from big city too, and haven't missed it at all. there's a direct train to Birmingham and London is an hour on train(s) so it's fairly easy to get a good city fix.

Memphisbelly · 13/08/2014 11:47

Market Harborough? Has good schools, good transport links or the surrounding villages around it.

Webguy · 03/05/2025 23:00

What about Bourne? That’s a nice town too!
