New kitchen-diner extension behind lounge: glass doors or solid wall between lounge and extension?

We are doing a back extension to our house which will be a large kitchen/dining area. However, l would like to be able to squeeze in a sofa in this space, so have decided to remove our existing back wall (lounge/diner) and have it rebuilt further in the house. It means the extension wouldn't be so long and narrow at 7m by 4m.

I have attached the new floorplan. My problem now is what to do with the new internal back wall. Should it be a solid wall? This will make the lounge a little dark. Should it be half glass or full glass doors. The floorplan shows all glass but not show how practical this is with little kids. Ideally I would like the lounge to be a snug and a divide in place but have the whole thing open for parties or Christmas etc which in reality is not every weekend or every month for that matter.

I also thought it might be nice to have internal bifold doors which will remain closed most of the time but not sure where to get them.

anyone had this done to their house? Any feedback would be appreciated?.

There is a company called Sliderobes which does large sliding partition doors/walls.

I was toying with the idea of having them in our living room which is very big. Once we moved in we liked it as it is, but I do still like the idea of the versatility in closing off/opening up space.

We have internal bifold doors. I love the flexibility of having a large open plan space, but also being able to close the doors of a snug lo
Iving room.

Things to consider IMO:

Fingerprints on glass. If I allowed myself to, I'd be cleaning the glass panels daily.

Furniture layout - I can't see your pic as I mon the app but a door like this means you have a wall, but not one you can put a sofa across or hang pictures on.

Yes agree. I think I would not make the whole wall a doorway. If you reclaim the corner it could be useful as a seating area.

The dimensions you describe are similar to my kitchen/diner. I do not have a sofa in mine, but do have a big table and a built in dresser which matches my kitchen down the other end from the kitchen.

We hv glazed internal bi fold doors. The end door opens independently so that stays open mostly. We only open it all up for parties etc.

We got our doors from B&Q, oak which we stained dark walnut. Always get loads of compliments on them and people are surprised where we bought them!

Thanks for all the replies!!... feeling really chuffed!
Throws - I will check out sliderobes.. never head of them but thanks for the tip.

Anything - any chance of pictures of your bifold? I don't want to hang pictures but thought I could put furniture in front of it anyway. We will most likely use a sofa accross the doors than use the doors as doors if u see what I mean... I.e doors used occasionally.

thanks for the idea dimsum.. will check out the b&q range.

good point on the finger printing... didn't think of that... I am the sort of person that will never clean it but it will drive me nuts just looking at them!!

Ours are very like this in set up OP www.vibrantdoors.co.uk/doors/internal-bifold-doors/glazed-oak-p10-roomfold---clear but without the far left door and with more panels to the glass.

Watching with interest as I'm thinking of doing something very similar in our house; what are you using the rooms behind the garage for (this is where our current kitchen is) will that be a utility?

KernowKids · 11/08/2014 23:29

We had 2 part glazed normal internal doors hung on a track so they can slide open or shut. The glass has an opaque design in so light come through but they can be separate rooms if need be.
