Painted furniture - on the way out?

Our bedroom furniture was bought with wedding present money so was waxed pine (as was the fashion at the time). We also have an antique oak tall chest of drawers in the room that was originally a very dark stain but we had stripped and then waxed to a light oak. For a good while, I have been thinking it all looks quite dated, but it's good, solid functional furniture so I'm loath to get rid, especially as we could only afford poorer quality stuff to replace it.

I'm considering painting it, but a little worried the Annie Sloan look is on the way out and it will look just as dated in a couple of years! In fact, maybe waxed pine will have come round again by then. Any thoughts? Or other suggestions? I don't like dark-stained furniture unless the house it's in has the manor-house proportions to set it off (ours doesn't.)

Toomuch, thank you ha, he has to get his nakey self in anywhere Grin

It's always handy to have a tin of the zinsser in, I used it when I bought a huge kidney bean dressing table for £5(!!!) for sealing in water marks, painted over it and sold it for £120

Burnishedsilver - it's Annie Sloans paint in Graphite, I keep meaning to go over it with dark wax to darken it up more but you know.....I'm lazy Grin

Primal, if you stick to things you like you can't go far wrong, I think a mixture of everything you love is the best look in a home, where your style grows organically.

Minkah, a bright coloured bannister would look amazing!

Annie sloan would probably work a treat but I would consider in varnishing it in something like polythuerene (about 3 coats) to give it a more durable finish.

minkah · 11/08/2014 09:53

Oh yes, you can varnish annie sloan, can't you.. But you can't varnish over wax?

So I couldn't get the dark wax effect?

Can you tell me, or is it too hard to explain.. Is there any benefit to using annie sloan if I varnish it? Ie be easier to use eggshell?

Or is AS just more beautiful, even if varnished?

I have some osmo poly left over..could I use that as a sealant do you think?

noddyholder · 11/08/2014 09:59

Well I am seeing a lot of natural wood again or plain white but not home spun looking a much more professional finish. Old school pine also hugely fashionable again which I know people will say they will never have! BUT about 8 years ago I posted a room i had done for work which was grey walls etc and I was told on MN it was drab and horrible Grin. I personally don't 'do' fashion in my own home but am just aware of trends via work.

Mind you I have this dining table with painted wooden legs and a bleached top and I just can't part with it Smile

Minkah I think the only advantage of using Annie Sloan in this instance would be not having to prime as much.

I wouldn't say AS is much more beautiful than any other type of paint, it just depends on what kind of look or finish you are after.

I know AS sell a varnish for use over painted floors if you are nervous using a poly over it.

However, if you have an eggshell paint that you want to use I would probably go ahead and use that one :)

Noddy, I am waiting for my fil to make me a top exactly like that for my table. I currently have the chunky farmhouse legs painted blue but am waiting for the top to go on to decide whether to change the colour or strip it back to natural wood. I love the huge mirror!

Noddy is that your house? I think we have pretty similar tastes (we have a lot of 'ethnicy' bits and pieces picked up from travels).

Your sofas are similar to those we are about to buy.

I am holding out until Wednesday (discount runs out that day) to see if the darker grey come back into stock because I think we'll trash the pale ones. I plan to change the feet for castors like this.

They are lovely. Bit low in the back for us as OH is 6ft4.

I am desperate for a career change, and have always wanted to do what you do. We just need to be brave and take the plunge. Hopefully next year.

noddyholder · 11/08/2014 11:37

Yes its a huge risk I was just ready for it when I did it. Although I think it is definteily dependent on how well you do the conversion and the basic structural work. The interior style makes it sell quicker but doesn't add any real value ime

PrimalLass · 11/08/2014 11:41

We did well on our own houses 1 and 2 but have ground to a halt here. I am gearing up to finish at the moment.

noddyholder · 11/08/2014 11:49

Yes motivation key!

minkah · 11/08/2014 14:28

Fcukfifa, thankyou for your input, as the voice of AS experience!

minkah · 11/08/2014 14:48

I'd like to layer the paints so that the line of the bannister isnt too solid.. so maybe AS is best for this project, and varnished!

I dont know if Osmo is the best for this.. something matte and enduring and low odour is required!

Have you used old violet much? Idk what to layer it with.. I'll have to make up some colour boards.. anything you've seen that you thought lovely?

It'd be amazing to be able to add some beauty to my hall, with colour.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 11/08/2014 16:41

That's interesting Noddy - when you say natural wood and old school pine do you mean waxed or varnished? I had visions of an light, airy room painted all white with wooden furniture when we first got the house (it's an attic room with a Velux, no curtains), and have only really used bedding to occasionally add colour. I'm not fussed on whether it's hip or fashionable but don't want it to look horribly dated either.

Waxed. Also a lot more colour and absolutely no greige although white still very popular.

MinimalistMommi · 11/08/2014 18:26

I want to paint my whole cottage white Noddy so will that be Ok?

noddyholder · 11/08/2014 19:37

As long as you love it anything is ok :) I personally LOVE white and try and use it everywhere if I can

MinimalistMommi · 11/08/2014 21:26

Yay! I've always loved white and it's always been my dream! Grin
