If I post some pictures of my tiny kitchen that has THREE doors leading into it, will you tell me if there is anything I can do with it?

It's not a teeny tiny room, not huge either, but the workspace is rubbish as there are three doors leading into my kitchen (4 if you count French double doors) so any potential room for workspace is cut off.

I would like to fit a new kitchen but I want to know if there is anything we can do to maximise our room. Currently as you can see from the pictures I have no preparation room. There is no storage space worth talking about. Through the door to the right of the cooker is a utility room which again is very small.

Wondering if anyone has any ideas? I'm not very hopeful, I've thought and thought about what I could do, but I'm not great at visualising the end result of things being moved around.

Sorry for the mess of the kitchen, it's just me and baby today so tidying up hasn't happened!

silly question, but can you block off any of the doors or are they all crucial? alternatively, can you do a large central island/breakfast bar combo?

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 19:56

This is what's at the other end of the room in case it's any use.

Do you have a separate dining room? Could you have an island in the kitchen?

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 19:57

I haven't got room for an island as I'd have no room for the table.

Would love one though.

It's hard to tell without exact dimensions, but could you fit an island unit in it? You could then have the table right next to the island unit.

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 19:59

I know the room isn't a super tiny room but the kitchen area is so badly designed in terms of space and yet I have no idea what would make it better.

I'm mortified with the clutter Blush

do you use the Utility room? Could you turn it into a walk in pantry?

Or block it off and do units top and bottom all round that corner?

Liara · 06/08/2014 20:00

Sorry, xpost.

Do you need the sofa in there? Could you move the table down and fit an island unit that way?

It would only have to be about 100cm long to make a big difference. I have one that size and it makes all the difference.

nikki1978 · 06/08/2014 20:01

Do you need a sofa and table in there?

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:01

Dimensions of the kitchen are 19' 3" x 4' 11"

Just looked at the estate agency brochure for the house.

tiny? It's great. when we knock through our properly tiny galley kitchen into the dining room we'll be left with one room that size.

can you knock through into the utility room?

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:03

Before you get to the utility when you go through the door there is a small porch and wc.

The utility leads to the garage so I don't think blocking it off would be possible.

I'd get rid of the sofa, have the table down the end and fit an island in - unless you can block a door of somewhere. Islands can also be crap though and simply get in the way...

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:05

This is the path to the utility so I don't think knocking through would be any good.

You are all being v helpful btw.

I'm really stuck though.

What about some additional units and worktop at a right angle going 3/4 of the way across the kitchen so it wouldn't be as big as an island but would give you extra usable space?

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:08

I think if there was no sofa in the kitchen it would solve the problem as we could use more of the space but the only other downstairs room is really small. Not enough room for everyone to stretch out. Plus that room is made even smaller by the fact that the french doors (which I hate) lead into it and swing into the room so the sofa is in the middle of the room. Hope that makes some sense!

Could you put the table up the end where the oven is and put the kitchen part up the end where the sofa is? I'd love that size of kitchen!

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:09

fox do you mean units under the clock area?

OP posts:
dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:12

notsure have never thought of that before!

I always thought I would have to keep the oven where it is.

I would love a big fridge!

Looking at the pictures I would also move the cooker side of the kitchen up to the sofa end and use the current cooker area for a square table, depending on space. What is the height under the window just next to the sofa? Could you get units under there, or even custom built shelving that would run up to fitted units across the sofa wall? Connecting the current section with your sink in it to a new section?

I love this sort of thing and would have the graph paper and pencil out to sketch a few ideas to scale - you can probably do this on a PC with some program or other.

Do you need to keep the French doors - is there access from anywhere else into the room that is through them?

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 06/08/2014 20:17

What son you use the tiny room for? If nothing then make it a dining table and have an island with stools at the end and keep the sofa

The room is too small to have as kitchen/dining/living

Move what you can into the utility - freezer, stuff you don't use very often etc

Agree with putting the kitchen down the sofa end

dottytablecloth · 06/08/2014 20:21

I really liking the idea of totally swapping the kitchen to the other end.

There is another way of accessing the living room apart from the french doors, I.e. Just through the hall. I have suggested getting rid of the french doors as I hate them but dh says no as it's a good source of light and he can see what's happening outside from the kitchen. Hmm

The window to the left of the sofa is quite low, much lower than the work tips in the rest of the kitchen.

What about replacing the sofa with a banquette and moving the table down that end.

We have something almost identical to this arrangement, with useful cupboards under the padded seating bit. Our kitchen fitter used wall cupboards and reinforced the top.
