Ikea Pax Wardrobes

We have an alcove in our bedroom that is 135 cm wide. I would love an old, shabby chic style wardrobe to go in the alcove but common sense prevails and in terms of offering a good storage solution it makes sense to look at something more fitted.

So I have stopped my Gumtree alerts and instead have had a look at the ikea website and although most of the Pax frames seem to come in 50 or 100cm widths there is one that is 75cm, so presumably would fit the alcove alongside a 50cm frame.

However the sliding doors seem to come in 150 cm widths for 2 doors. My question is to any Pax owners could this work with a smaller size frame. I am thinking it could because presumably there can be an overlap? TIA

I'm in a similar situation myself except one of my alcove is 140 cm and other is 100 cm , I have now opted for hinged doors of 100 cm and rest I'm going for two 20cm shelves.Your idea would work but there is a downside to it as the doors are big and designed for 150 cm so you can't access three quarters of wardrobe at any time

Thanks very much Gathering, I hadn't thought of having an open shelf but will definitely look at that option. I want it all hidden away really but presumably there are baskets that could fit in the shelves. Will look at the hinged doors as well although the ones I prefer I think only come as sliding doors.

Just looking at ours... I think it'd work (with a permanent overlap) but you would have to cut down the runners? I think you literally couldn't access the middle 25-30cm or so at all? So could only really have hanging space or shelves there; no drawers.
Possibly a crazy solution but if you really don't want outward opening doors, could you fit a long roller blind instead?!!

yawningbear · 05/08/2014 07:37

Thanks for having a look at your Moggle! We would use it mainly for hanging space so the bit that we couldn't access properly maybe wouldn't matter so much. I don't mind using hinged doors but I know there are sliding doors that I really like, not sure about the hinged doors. Have just had a quick look and there do seem to be a few options though and one that might be similar to the sliding doors I like but it is hard to tell for sure. Will need to go and have a trip to Ikea.

Gathering, if you are still around, the shelving unit that you are going to put next to the Pax Frame, is it from the Pax series or just another shelving unit that will fit the space?

Thanks again to you both!

I have loads of pax wardrobes all over the house but all hinged doors.

The 75cm frame only applies to sliding doors as all the hinged doors are 50cm wide to fit a single wardrobe so technically you could have one single 50cm wide wardrobe with a hinged door and then a 75cm wardrobe with one hinged door on one side leaving the interior 25cm on display.

You could have your hanging rail with a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3yOz3mua1c skubb] organiser in the no door bit.

I am willing to be corrected but I don't know of any other Ikea product that is 35cm in width that you could use, a Billy bookcase is 40cm and no where near as deep, a Gnedby is 20cm wide but only 17cm deep (think cd storage)

I live very close to an Ikea so have spent a lot some time there.

How about a tall kitchen cabinet? They would be 60cm wide so you would get 120cm in total.

This is the skubb organiser www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00193386/

Please ignore the above video unless you wish to see a tame sex scene blush grin it's from the film The Spectacular Now film.

ContentedSidewinder · 05/08/2014 09:27

I feel like I need to explain. I have just watched Divergent and my friend was saying how they were all in lots of films together like The Spectacular now and The Fault in our Stars.

I had no idea so I looked and Shailene woodley was saying how real her sex scene was in the spectacular now so I looked. grin I feel a name change coming on wink

If you wanted to have an open section as sidewinder suggests, a handyman would easily be able to cut down shelves to fit, we have done this where we store sheets and towels but I haven't solved the problem with the sliding doors (and have no room for hinged), it's sort of an open closet arrangement but you wouldn't want that in a bedroom.

Sleepwhenidie · 05/08/2014 09:33

I think if you have a cool shoe collection then it could look good on open shelves Confused

Parietal · 05/08/2014 09:51

why not have a joiner build in something that perfectly fits your alcove? then you maximise the space and get something much neater & smarter?

otherwise, pax with regular hinged doors would work.

mewkins · 05/08/2014 09:52

In our old house we butchered a pax from the bargain area in order to fit round a bulkhead. You could buy an extra carcass and make shelves to fit the extra space? With our diy job we used curtains as doors and it looked fine (ikea does lots of lovely patterened extra long curtains you could use for this).

yawningbear · 06/08/2014 08:08

Thankyou for all the replies and ideas, all really helpful and even a tame sex scene Grin I actually really like the idea of having fabric rather than doors, or having a fabulous shoe display but there is no way DP will be convinced on either of those counts.

I do think the best solution is to get a joiner to make something that fits the space properly but had anticipated that would be costly so had wondered if the Pax would work. From the responses though I think we definitely need the frame made to fit but I wonder if the Pax sliding doors on a homemade could work if we accept the overlap, or if they need to fit with a pax frame?

I have measured the space again and we have a very thick, tall skirting and if that was removed just in the area where the wardrobe would be obviously, the space would be more like 145 cm, so would still need a homemade frame but there would be less of an overlap with the sliding doors IYSWIM.

We had 2.4m to fill and used 2x100 pax units and a billy bookcase with the height extender on top! Looks great

Billy has the option of a glass door so we went for that on the top half and put an office drawer unit (you would never know - lovely slidy drawers!) from ikea on the bottom, behind the wooden part of the door. Everything matches the hinged pax doors so it all looks 'right'

Love the pax interiors; very adaptable and useful and cheap

Have you seen the ikea hackers forum too? There might be tweaks on there you could utilise

yawningbear · 08/08/2014 07:24

Sounds great Chish, love your name btw. The ikea hackers website is great, makes anything seem possible! Current plan is to use carcus of original hideous fitted wardrobe that we inherited when we bought the house. Our joiner has had look and he suggested trying to recycle it and he reckons the sliding pax door should work. All looks possible so that is great. Thanks all.

I'd love to see some pictures of these awesome Pax hacks!

And I really want to see Divergent- I liked the books more than Hunger Games.
