Anyone replaced spotlights with pendants?

Have about 18 spotlights in the kitchen but the wiring wasn't done properly which means they all need to be taken down and fiddled with, bits of ceiling cut out etc. I am toying with the idea of just getting rid of them all and putting some pendants in. Has anyone done this? What do I need to consider, and roughly how expensive would it be? Thanks.

You need to consider the repairs you need to the ceiling afterwards.

In order to make it good (properly I mean), you may need to replace several sections of plaster board (ie remove and replace sections of the ceiling). It may not be possible just to cover over the holes left behind.
It's hard to say because I obv can't see it or how the room is laid out.

It wont be prohibitively expensive. It's more of a mess factor really.

18 down lighters sounds very bright!! Unless your kitchen is very big?

Pendants can work but be aware of positioning. In relation to where you need lighting (over dining table but what if you wanted to move dining table later etc) and over island etc.

I think perhaps consider a mix of downlighters and carefully placed pendants?

If the current wiring is defective, it all needs to be redone anyway so the mess/expense of fixing the ceiling and replacing and repositioning lights will have to be done anyway.

There isn't an easy option on this one to save on mess and repairs to ceiling here.

Perhaps speak to your electrician about positioning of lights and whether it would be possible to have both pendants and down lights and have the switched seperately.

Maybe 18 is an exaggeration - I'm trying to remember and thought I'd err on the larger figure, although it's kind of in two sections so it's not a tiny kitchen.

My thinking is just that if there's going to be loads of messing around anyway, it the long run it would be easier just to have a few pendants which I think we would be less likely to have problems with and much cheaper in terms of bulbs.

Maybe something like this.

I will aske the electrician for a quote for both. He's just quite slow in getting back to me and I am impatient!

Oh. I think I mean downlights, not spotlights. They are recessed in the ceiling.

If you have a fairly large kitchen diner it may be worth going for a combination of downlighters and pendants.

In a large kitchen with just a few pendants, you may find some of your work/prep areas in the kitchen a bit dark.

I have a combination. Downlighters in part of the kitchen area and three pendants over the island. I have two large pendants over the dining table and three further downlighters over a seating area in the dining room.

It sounds a lot but isn't given size of kitchen diner.

I like the pendant you linked to Grin. There are so many lovely ones out there. Your main issue would be choosing.

I do think I would consider a combination of both.

Downlighters alone can be very bright and over powering. Pedants alone can be a little too dark particularly in the kitchen prep areas.

Have a google for kitchens on house to home and look at how other have placed their lighting. May give you some ideas. Or nip down to WH Smith and have a quick browse in a kitchens/interiors magazine and eye up the lighting layouts in there.
