Library wall and rolling ladders wishlist

One of the things I'd love to install in our new place is built in bookshelves up to the ceiling on one wall and a rolling ladder to reach the higher shelves, a la Harry Potter!

Has anyone done this? How much does it cost? We are looking at Ladderstore and would love some advice - we know it will be expensive and are a bit nervous...

Its always been on my dream wishlist as well, and now we're moving to a period place with nice high ceilings... Hoping someone comes on and tells you where and (gulp) how much.

doesn't seem to be an overly expensive option, depending on the level of quality/finish you opt for. the ladder and track itself seem to be available online from about £250, which i expect will be a drop in the ocean compared to the materials and installation of the built in bookcase itself!

just google "library ladders".

I am desperately trying to buy the track for a rolling library ladder, in black, in the UK. Can anyone advise. We are not sure whether to buy or make the oak ladder - depends on cost. We've seen super pics of these for sale in USA, and have now built the shelves but can't find track, mechanisms etc in the UK!

I didn't get that far as our ceilings are high, but not that high. We ended up getting Billy bookcases from IKEA after looking at far more expensive ones and getting a swish 'library chair' that converts to a step ladder. It looks great. The room is about 13ft by 9ft and has bookcases all down one side and round a corner so it is a bent 'L' shape. I had glass desks at the far end which really lengthened the room. I mention it as if for any reason you have to compromise (which I hope you don't!) there are some fab alternatives that once in place look really good. I dreamed about my library for two years whilst we had lodgers in the room, it kept me sane planning it in my head every time I got fed up with sharing my house!

I too would love one in black. We have appropriate bookshelves but not ladder. I just balance precariously on the back of a sofa at the moment to reach the higher shelves.

I've been thinking if we put up (firmly) a black metal rod and make a slot (long thin hole) in the two sides at the top of a wooden ladder , wouldn't that work?? The ladder would come out at a slant( pole at top of slot) and go back against the wall ( pole at bottom of slot)??
For once this isn't about money it's because I can't buy the stylish black hardware in the UK.

The only places I've seen these for sale are Ligne Roset and Roche Bobois... and they're rather pricey!
