Which colour do you think would work best in our hallway- house being done up ready to go on the market.
Big spacious light hallway in traditional 1940's house with parquet flooring
Thanks

The purpley grey second from top in the second photo is the best of the ones selected. The others are a bit gloomy - even if the hall is light and airy. I like the strong green but it won't be to everyone's tastes if this house is going on the market. Personally I'd stick to neutrals.

MrsLettuce · 14/07/2014 10:21

The green that's second from the bottom in the second photo. Exactly right for a 40s hall, yer typical neutral is just going to 'new build-erise' the place.

Squeakyheart · 14/07/2014 10:26

I think the greyish one too as you really want to maximise light if you are trying to sell.

MrsJohnDeere · 14/07/2014 11:09

I like the green on the left (have similar in my kitchen) but I'd go for boring and neutral to sell a house. Then viewers think it would be easy to slap a coat of paint in the colour they like over the top and it makes a good first impression (light and airy).

burnishedsilver · 14/07/2014 11:32

I don't think any of them are neutral enough for selling. The lighter grey is the best but I suspect it might turn out purple.

Megaloof · 14/07/2014 11:38

None. all too dark. Go for a white with a tiny touch of colour.

wowfudge · 14/07/2014 11:59

We had grey (3 tones, including very, very pale on the ceiling) in our hall, stairs and landing of a 1930s house when we moved in. It was drab and cold feeling as a result.

Halls need light and warmth to feel welcoming. If you like greens, how about a lighter, softer green instead?

BlueSkySunnyDay · 14/07/2014 12:05

Out of those id say the grey - personally I think hallways are better in paler colours. My only reservation is if it's perhaps a bit lilac?

BlueSkySunnyDay · 14/07/2014 12:07

You don't want someone to walk in and think "it's going to take me ages to paint over that! " which it would with a dark color

RumAppleGinger · 14/07/2014 12:58

Not a big fan of any of them. If you are painting for the sole purpose of marketing just stay safe and go with something neutral.

Madmog · 14/07/2014 14:09

I think most people will see past decoration, so if you really feel it needs doing go with your gut feeling. My daughter's room was pink and one agent told me the look at the room would be a real selling point as it was so warm and inviting. We had yellow and blue in other rooms and the lady who bought said she liked the house and colour scheme was a bonus as she would have chosen colours herself - so you can never guess what someone else will like!

Pickacolouranycolour · 14/07/2014 15:36

Thank you all we are going to go for magnolia :) think I needed to be told- if we were staying the traditional green would look fab but it might not be to everyone's taste so magnolia should hopefully look nice next to the white staircase

The lightest one because however big the hall the pictures the Estate Agent might take will look darker. I quite like the bluey grey.

IvyBeagle · 14/07/2014 15:57

Should have refreshed, yes, magnolia, good choice. :)

Marmitelover55 · 14/07/2014 19:34

If you are thinking of magnolia then my favourite is dulux timeless it's more of a white but lovely I think.

Belloc · 15/07/2014 15:08

I dislike Magnolia, it has a horrible peachy hue.

How light is the hall? What covering is on the stairs? Where does the light come from? (N, E, W, S?) Can you please take a photo of the hall.

I think the very plain architectural features will look best with an entirely milk-white hallway and staircase.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 15/07/2014 15:17

There are loads of different 'magnolias'

It can be a lovely neutral creamy colour

7to25 · 15/07/2014 15:39

ditto
I hate magnolia. Look for a light neutral that nods towards grey.

SwedishEdith · 15/07/2014 15:52

Magnolia is horrible; really depressing. I'd just do as pale and clean a colour as possible (I'd just do white tbh)

rootypig · 15/07/2014 15:54

The inky blue! Please please please the inky blue! Oh it will be incredible.

Magnolia is grim.

MrsLettuce · 15/07/2014 16:17

Yeah, if you're not going with one of the colours then proper white will look much better than a 'magnolia' shade. Warm off-whites are very often cheap looking and depressing.

burnishedsilver · 15/07/2014 16:47

Dulux magnolia is more of a cream than a peachy colour. Its quite nice. Calico and linen are are worth trying.
