built in wardrobes - ballpark cost??

We're renovating the house we just bought and the main bedroom has some really dated floor to ceiling built in wardrobes along one wall (3 lots of double doors).

Has anyone had anything similar done and could give me an idea of ballpark costs please? I've found some websites for local joiners but have no idea of the likely cost.

I also thought about just swapping the doors but thought a) the carcasses are quite old still and b) that might cost a fair bit anyway so we might as well just start from scratch.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

We got a horrifying quote from Hammonds so ended up buying Ikea tall wardrobes, which fitted our ceiling heights within an inch or so. We had to erect them upright, but they look great and a fraction of the cost.

Ikea carcasses are fantastic . We bought our own doors then a joiner fitted them and the ikea insides.

Wow thanks for the quick replies - that's two votes for Ikea then :-)

Will have to measure the ceiling height.

ken by the carcasses do you mean you can buy just the shells with no doors?

We had ours done for £1000. 5 doors, built into a very funny angle. Mdf painted egg shell white. Look fabulous.

Sorry , our shell was a wall where the built in wardrobes were done by the builder . We bought the innards - drawers , shelves etc and then added different sliding doors . We did DDs as well and for around half the price of sharps etc.

Ridiculously fucking expensive.

£3500 for not very I much imo

titchypumpkin · 13/07/2014 22:49

ouch exit! that's a lot to spend to be disappointed :-(

ken thanks that makes sense. We could in theory have them wall to wall down one side so I guess that would just mean they'd need doors and a frame etc. Will definitely check out the Ikea website

We did wall to wall, with shelves down the centre, double hanging both sides and a top shelf, then long hanging on a narrower strip around a little corner of the chimney breast, two solid doors, one mirror. Total was about £1200 paint, doors, fixtures, rails, slider bits, gypsum boards and plaster not including labour as Dh made it all. I bloody love it.

Ikea do another wardrobe system called Stolmen where the fitments are on brackets which fit to the ceiling and floor. With those you would only need sliding doors on the front of the space or doors fixed to pillars that go from floor to ceiling rather than carcasses to divide the space up and doors fixed to those IYSWIM.

Local joiner built to design in an awkward space, wardrobe and covered shelving space over a 4ft wall and alcove, £800.
