rewiring a whole house

Has anyone had this done recently? I was just wondering how long it takes (3 bed) and how much chaos it creates.
How do you tell if it needs it? My house was built in the 50s and quite possibly has never been rewired.

Ours was built in the 1920s and had never been rewired - til last year. It was quite chaotic, and very dusty. We had it done as part of a whole lot of work we had done on our house. We had very few sockets before, and now we have lots. And peace of mind, knowing it's done.

Its a messy job and can require re plastering, floor boards up etc. Will take maybe a week to 10 days.

Thank you. I guess I will have to find somewhere else to go when they're doing it?

Will I have to totally redecorate afterwards? Will the floorboards be broken?

Boards should be okay, they will have to move furniture etc and take carpets up to get to the wires, the boards can be re fitted afterwards, they may have to cut some but again, there is a way of re mounting to the joist. The worst part may be if the cables are buried in walls and require the plaster to be cut/chased out to make a channel, we have black ash plaster - horrible stuff, that goes everywhere. maybe worth having a chat to them so see what their plans are and you could always protect/cover some stuff if required . I would move out for a few days to make their life easier and more enjoyable for you !

We moved out. And yes we did need to redecorate. (Still doing it - gradual process!)

My neighbour is having hers done at the moment. She's moved out for 2 weeks as it was going to be easier and quicker for the electrician. I know she packed up glass and china beforehand. Our houses were built in the '30's and hers was last rewired 50 years ago when she moved in.

Ours (1930s and very very bad) was done gradually. The biggest bit took most of a week, lots of channelling and floorboards up and we were not there for it. It was horribly horribly messy and really very expensive, even when being done by (appropriately qualified) family.

We had ours done a few months ago (1930s with later extension - they rewired it all). We had to move out for two weeks and pack away/dismantle as much furniture as possible. It made a lot of mess and dust - make sure any furniture left out is covered and take down curtains etc. They made channels in every wall, sometimes in several places, which were then filled with bonder but not plastered over, so we are still living with lines down the walls until we can get them properly filled. It took them just over a week (with quite a large team of electricians) but ours is a 5-bed.
