Talked ourselves into a range cooker but

...induction or gas? DP is keen on gas because he is a Man and Men like Fire. I have never had induction but from everything I've read think I'd like to give it a go. Cheaper, easier to clean etc. We cook a lot but are enthusiastic rather than proficient, eat low carb so no baking but lots of meat and stir frying.

The cooker is this one in case it makes a difference www.mercuryappliances.co.uk/products/mercury-1000.aspx

Any thoughts welcome!

I went for induction due to cat often likes to walk on it.

Plus the cleanability of it as nothing gets baked on if it spills.

We went for the new ovens that rangemaster are just starting to build.

The professional fx90.

I'm very excited but they only make 10 at a time. I was number 7 to order one and they say they take a month to make so mine will be ready end of July.

I could have ordered something quicker but happy to wait without an oven this time of year as it's warm enough to have salads or bbq's.

Very excited!

My dad has an induction range, and a tiny two-burner gas hob next to it. I always always use the gas hob.

Real chefs have gas hobs and electric ovens! You need to have instant heat, not wait around for the bloody induction to warm up. Plus the controls are fiddly and I never have any idea what temperature it's on. I really don't like it.

Plus you can't put anything on top of it without it making an annoying beeping alert... No. Gas yes! Induction no.

Induction doesn't take any time at all to heat up! It's as quick or quicker than gas. And mine doesn't beep. Love it. Go for it, OP.

I've had both. You shouldn't have to wait for induction to heat up? It is pretty much instant. It would boil a pan of water more quickly than a gas burner....almost too quickly, I was always over boiling pots of pasta. After cooking the hob cools down instantly. I'm not sure which I prefer....I do hate cleaning the gas hob though.

I love induction (miss having one in our new house) BUT the one thing gas is better for is stir frying. You can't use a proper wok on an induction hob - you only get heat via the flat bit on the base not up the sides, and you can't do that swishy chef thing of waggling the wok.

Have just ordered range with gas hob. I don't want to have to replace all of my pans etc. Induction just doesn't appeal to me.

I have the Falcon range with induction. Looks very similar to the Mercury.

I am very happy with it. Fast, efficient so easy to clean and blends in seamlessly with the worktop. My friend is a professional chef and he persuaded me to go for Induction. According to him most professional kitchens are switching over from gas.

RuddyDuck · 08/07/2014 19:07

We have an induction hob, it heats up instantly, you don't have to wait for it to heat. It is quicker than gas, more controllable and is a joy (well, almost) to clean. Gas is slightly better for stir frying, but I think the advantages of an induction hob far outweigh that slight disadvantage.

I have an induction hob. Have to say DH suggested it and I did not like the thought because I am a bit of a gas girl . I thought it looked like cooking on an iPad . That said , it is absolutely fantastic. I could not recommend an induction hob enough . They work , they are so easy to clean and they do the whole heating up thing v quickly . Just a thought

Thank you so much everyone for the replies, helped to convince me to go for one, just about to order the Mercury. If we can ever agree on the colour that is.
