How easy is it to fit a Log burning stove

I'm about to move into a rental property were the previous tennant fitted a log burning stove. He took the stove with him when he moved out the chimney is lined and ready for a new stove to be fitted.

How easy would it be to fit a new stove? What size would we need for a 2 bedroomed property? Does the work need a proffessional or signing off in some way?

Any help gratefully received.

When we had ours done, the installation costs were as much as the cost of the stove and like you our chimney was already lined. It will have to be installed by a hetas registered installer or building control from the local council will need to inspect the installation and sign it off.Bit of a faff but wouldnt be without it.

Most likely fairly easy. However you will need to have it swept, to fjnd out the size and positioning of the liner that is there. So that you can buy a stove that fits. Do you know what stove the previous tenant had? Insofar as fitting get it done proffessionally and signed off for smoke amounts they must be HETAS approved. If you look at nacs.org.uk/ you will find someone in your area. This will cover you should anything go wrong in case of contents insurance and buildings insurance for the ll.

definitely needs HETAS and building control sign off.

isn't this for the landlord? It is in his interest to protect his property.

Bums. I knew it wouldn't be anywhere near as easy (or cheap) as my dh thought. Will have to get some quotes. The previous tennent fitted stoves for a living so I think it was an expensive stove, hence him taking it when he left.

also are you happy with all the log shifting, chopping and storage?

as well as the dangers of smoking yourself to death through not connecting it properly, there are various measurements away from walls, from chimney at back, from front of hearth etc. I should imagine it will be difficult to find the right sized one. And yes, there are different outputs and you will need the correct one for the size of room to be heated.

You're unlikely to be able to get one fitted for less than £200 and actual stove at least £300. Could you ask previous tenant for a quote?

it may seem just a box in which you burn things (which it is, basically) but incorrect installation can suffocate you, smoke you out or burn the place down.

£300 for a stove is VERY cheap! Ours was £700 and that was a cheapie. Needs repainting every year but otherwise seems ok.
