I want a house I can't afford in London. Where could I buy it?

I've been out leafleting locally and have realised I want one day to own a double fronted Victorian red brick house. Quite badly. I will never be able to afford one in London. Is there anywhere nice to live within commuting distance of London that I might be able to buy a house like this one day? Current budget, were we to move today, would be about £600,000 or so.

Faversham - well within budget but over an hour on the train so you would need to be working very close to Victoria - is the style right?

TooSpotty · 06/07/2014 13:58

The style is OK although a bit close to the road. But I forgot to say that Kent is out. My husband won't live there - bad memories.

Horsham or some of the nearby villages are commutable and there are houses as you describe within your price range:

What about Reading? Wouldn't be my first choice but v commutable to London and I'm pretty sure you would be able to find that style of house within budget

joanofarchitrave · 06/07/2014 14:11

Too Georgian? Bedford is inside an hour to Euston/St Pancras, 2 miles from this house. Any choice on London stations?

jeee · 06/07/2014 14:15

There are some lovely, and easily commutable villages in Essex.

TooSpotty · 06/07/2014 19:06

Oh, some lovely houses there.

Victoria/Waterloo for preference but not a deal breaker.

I would also be prepared to live in a double fronted Georgian house. You know, if forced. I am also prepared to live in a single fronted but substantial Victorian house. I'm not that fussy. Wink

That last one is amazing inside not sure outside though. But WOW!!! The one prior needs too much work for that price.

Some more interesting ones, thanks.

The Tunbridge Wells one is too small. I think we may not be rich enough there.

I don't want to be in one of the 'up and coming' seaside towns really. They can be really desolate in winter.

Essex is obviously worth exploring.

Hastings is bloody lovely though.

My curveball here is........Leicester.

It is by no means south obviously but hardly anyone realises it is only 66 mins to London so quicker than much of the south!

Your budget would buy you a mansion in the best area/s.

arundeljones · 06/07/2014 20:01

Maybe look in Saturdays guardian on line- they had a map of travelling distances and house prices

OublietteBravo · 06/07/2014 20:05

Here? - not double-fronted, but fairly substantial and close to the station.

Spickle · 06/07/2014 20:35

A little over budget

I didn't know Surbiton was so cheap!

I think Leicester would be stretching it a little as it would be another 30 minutes across London on arrival. I am warming to Bedford and its enormo-houses though.

And thanks, arundel, I will do. I was too busy with my leaflets to read the papers this weekend.

Interesting possibilities, thanks.

My husband says Bedford is too far. So that one is out.

Fantasy moves are so tricky.

My God, take the chelmsford one [lusts]

Just piping up about Bedford. We moved for your reason from Tooting. We wanted Heaver Estate style Victorian house for less £££. Why does hubby think it is too far? It is 37 mins to St Pancras on the fast train. My DH gets door to door in 1.10 versus 1 hour from Tooting. Obviously it depends where you need to be in London...
