Does anyone have one of those emergency fire escape ladders?

Our windows are high and there is concrete below all of them. Does anyone have one of the emergency ladders that you can throw out of the window?

We haven't but I'm watching with interest. I realised only the other day that we'd be in a similar situation should there be a fire.

We have usually lived in one-story houses, but we bought one shortly after moving into a two-story house for the first time.

We had a rope one with a continuous speed descent gear for my third floor bedroom. Great for peace of mind.

No, but we have a fire escape plan that involves shoving a mattress out of a window and lowering ourselves down by our fully extended arms.

PeachyPinky · 03/07/2014 22:41

Yes we do, and I hope they are never required.

For those that do, is yours single use or reuseable? I looked at a few today but they seem to be single use and I thought it might be useful to have a practice!

I had one of those free home fire assessments by the local fire station to find out what we should do about a fire escape plan from our 3 storey house. It was great (and ds was vv impressed by the fire engine parked outside the house). They told us not to bother, that they could be with us in 10 mins if needed and rescue us and we/the baby and toddler could be at more risk if we tried to use an escape ladder. They gave is some leaflets and good advice and offered us smoke detectors (we already had decent ones).

I think if I lived far away from the fire station then I would defo reconsider.

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 04/07/2014 09:03

That's interesting crossed - we're even closer to the fire station, so maybe we don't need one. I was thinking about getting one of their assessments so I think I'll hold off on buying anything until I've spoken to them.

we have one in the gallery office of my commercial premises, in case the stairway should be afire or filled with smoke.

It is all-metal (no polypropylene ropes to melt) and the bracket is permanently bolted to the inside wall.

It has never been used in an exercise. Personally I think people are quite likely to be injured falling off it.

Good firedoors and a protected escape route are I think a better precaution. I despair of people who have loft conversions and won't close their fire doors.

peggyundercrackers · 04/07/2014 10:14

we don't have one, neither do we have an escape plan in the event of fire. we only live 1/4 mile away from fire station so would hope we don't need it.

we have landlines in the bedrooms just incase no mobile reception too
