Grey bathrooms?

miaowmix · 02/07/2014 16:25

Has anyone painted a bathroom grey? I'm veering towards a dark, slatey grey for ours with white woodwork, and wonder if anyone has any recommendations?

It's a large, square-ish south facing room with large sash window if that helps. At the moment is a very pale bluish violet with grey woodwork (including airing cupboard), I kind of what to reverse it but not sure if it will work. I need to decide a paint colour tonight btw so massively appreciate any suggetions Smile.

Habitat have some nice colours - you can get them in Homebase. I've just bought a tester for one called slate which is a dark grey but they do a few greys

CluelessCrapParent · 02/07/2014 16:34

We painted ours Farrow and Ball Old White, which I think is greyish, and had white tiles, ceiling and bath, wash basin etc..Marble beigey floor. It is nice and calming.

Thanks very much - the habitat ones look lovely, I had no idea Homebase sold them now. Slate is nice but I was veering towards F&B Downpipe which I think may be a bit darker.

Old white is beautiful too but I had in mind a more dramatic dark grey.
I have to choose it without a tester as it needs to be done asap so am just going to ask my decorator to pick it u and hope for the best.
Bath, loo, sink are all white, so hoping this should work.

I am wondering about that too. We have a grey suite. I wish it was white but can't afford to replace and it really is very pale (I am sure it's called Morning Mist or Silver or something daft!). The previous owners clearly didn't like grey as they have covered the walls in an outrageously strong jade green marble paper and some flowery borders (no really!) . I am leaning towards a slatey colour for the walls.

wowfudge · 02/07/2014 16:43

Friends have a small bathroom which is tiled in dark grey and purple - it actually looks very nice. No reason why your paint choice wouldn't work.

miaowmix · 02/07/2014 16:51

Thanks all - I'm convinced now I think. Existing woodwork is pale greyish with a hint of green, a bit like Mizzle by F&B but I reckon it would probably look better white, unless any colour gurus have a better idea?

This would be skirtings, window frames, a large airing cupboard and a big wooden cabinet...

Do it! I've seen bathrooms like you describe - white woodwork, dark grey walls -and it looks great. I prefer a slightly blue toned dark grey.

Downpipe is very dark - would look fab but only if you have a light bathroom and lots of white otherwise. but sounds like you do. What colour is your floor? You could do one Downpipe wall and the rest white maybe?

Ours is grey & white. I keep meaning to buy some brightly colored towels & bath mat to brighten it up a bit but I'm
Not sure what colour (orange, bright green, pink, purple?)
However, I think grey is a lovely colour for a bathroom. If I was to have our done again I'd probably have the dark tiles on all walls as I prefer those to the paid ones. But having the bathroom done was three weeks of hell & I'm not pooing in a bucket in the garden ever again!

Ha - great minds minipie - I have already clicked those exact 2 links and they are the ones that convinced me!
I know what you mean re blue-toned - any suggestions before I change my mind?
Yes happily it is a large bathroom with huge sash window south facing so plenty of lovely natural light, and white fittings etc.
But our floor is an amtico ebony wood www.amtico.com/flooring/wood/ebony-wood

so also very dark. Overload??

Lovely tiles Germgirl - gorgeous. Luckily we're just having plastering and paint so can use the bathroom, no buckets thank god!
I think turquoise, pink and white could work towel-wise?

I recently bought a lovely H&M bathmat in turqouise, kind of Moroccan style, similar to this lp.hm.com/hmprod?set=key[source],value[/model/2014/3AL%200220840%20001%2028%205780.jpg]&set=key[rotate],value[]&set=key[width],value[]&set=key[height],value[]&set=key[x],value[]&set=key[y],value[]&set=key[type],value[STILL_LIFE_FRONT]&hmver=2&call=url[file:/product/large]
their stuff looks high end and is fab quality for the price.

i have some Hammam style towels from White co which I think will also work well...

or a really lovely acid yellow if you're feeling brave towel-wise?

I am only meant to be sourcing paint but now feel the need for a huge restyle!

Well, those links are what made me suggest one Downpipe wall only - the first one has a dark floor and only one downpipe wall (the one with the window). I think all four walls in downpipe plus a dark floor could be a bit too dark/enclosing. But are you having any tiling on the walls and if so what will it be? For example if you are having half height tiles in white then not such an issue to have downpipe on all the walls above that.

minipie · 02/07/2014 17:32

Oooh what are those grey tiles please Germgirl??

Lodgecockers · 02/07/2014 17:57

Go for it! I had exactly the same thought process - thought it could be too dark, but did it. And we love the result. All 4 walls are downpipe, but we painted wimborne white above the dado and the woodwork/ceiling. Our floor is stripped pine but I think it would have worked even with a darker floor. Bathroom suite and a big wall of white tiles which has boxed in all the pipes etc. I was thinking of bright towels and so on but in the end went with white which (I think) looks lovely. It's not dark at all, just a bit dramatic and feels very cosy in the evenings.

oops sorry - my picture's the wrong way round

burnishedsilver · 02/07/2014 18:02

I just did my ensuite in Dulux dapple grey with white wall tiles an slate effect floor tiles. I dont think I'd go much darker.

SwedishEdith · 02/07/2014 18:53

I think It'll look great

Germgirl · 02/07/2014 18:56

Those towels are lovely. Thank you. I like the idea of turquoise & pink. I'll have a look round & introduce some colour. It's a bit 'Business Hotel' at the moment.

Germgirl · 02/07/2014 19:02

Mini, the tiles were from Topps but I've just looked on their website & they're not there any more. I did see some great ones called 'Stardust' which if I was doing the bathroom again I'd probably choose (although I'm
Not sure DH would go for sparkly walls!)

miaowmix · 02/07/2014 19:52

Great advice all - thanks. Lodgecockers I LOVE your bathroom, that's the look I'm going for although no dado rails. I think I'm going to be brave and have 4 downpipe walls and hope the natural light and white woodwork lifts it.
Downpipe ordered! Will post a pic when done. Cheers folks.Smile

Sounds great. I have grey tiles in my family bathroom with lime green towels and bath mat.

DoNotDisturb · 04/07/2014 21:59

Go for it. We have our walls urban obsession (crown I think) and crisp white woodwork and I love it!

RainbowsStars · 04/07/2014 22:00

My en suite is grey with turquoise or,bright pink, depending what is in the wash and what is being used.

Pipbin · 06/07/2014 00:00

We have a slate grey bathroom. I don't remember the paint we used but I think it was Crown kitchen and bathroom. The bathroom floor tiles stayed the same as they were grey already and it was the lime green and badly peeling. Everything else is white.
