We are moving next week and been told by our broadband provider that it takes a week to set up. Is there anything we can do in the meantime to get connection online?

I hook my phone up and use the wifi on that when my twinternet is down. You can also get a dongle (looks like a USB stick).

If that doesn't work it depends what do you need it for? I'm a freelancer and work from home but most days DS is home with his Dad so I have to find somewhere away from home with wifi - today it is the wetherspoons. Another day the library, or the garden centre cafe! Or get internet unlimited on your phone for a month?

Hope you're not with BT. When we moved our 'one week' turned into 6!

Or use it as an excuse to unplug from the world for a bit Smile although a month is a bit long!!

Yes BT were a nightmare when we moved. I used to tether my ipad to my iphone when we had no broadband. Or went in the library.

Was a pain though.

Were currently in temporary accommodation pending our house purchase, so we've got mobile wifi ('MIFI') through EE at the moment. It runs off the 3G (or 4g if you have it) mobile signal. Ours is a pay as you go one and not the cheapest option compared with broadband but is a great temporary measure. Plus you can take it anywhere with a mobile signal e.g. on holiday etc. You can run numerous devices off it at once, and top up as needed.

I used my phone for Internet when we were moving. I was also working though so did anything that would be annoying on a phone (change of address stuff etc) at lunch or before work.

When we had a break in broadband supply, I got a mobile broadband dongle from Argos with a months unlimited data, and it was brilliant

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/07/2014 09:33

I used my phone and the kids tethered to it with their tablets.

Check your contract for charges, especially tethering, maybe add an extra allowance on for a month if you need to.

How much you'll use depends on what you are doing with it, just browsing MN won't use that much data, the children tethering for Minecraft etc also doesn't seem to use masses of data, but streaming any kind of media eats your data in seconds. Dd2 use 2Gig of data the other night watching Netflix on my phone.

Thanks for your messages. Is a dongle easy to hook up and what sort of cost is it? Is tethering the same thing? Will not need it for a huge amount but will need it for a few bits and pieces. Much as I would love to not have internet for a week, I will be needing it!

This is the one we got - you plug it into a USB slot and that it!

Similar happened to me. Think it was 4 weeks.

First of all, the engineer who was due to come and fit the new line simply didn't show up. Apparently my "order" never went through properly... Well, they managed to take my money and send me a new router, so I don't believe that.

They did send me a little gadget that gave me internet through the phone signal. It just about worked, but would cut out a lot.

I did end up getting some compensation, and my internet has worked perfectly ever since.

They said they'd let me know when to send the little internet gadget back to them... Almost 6 months later I still have it!
