Your gardening knowledge is awesome - the name of the white-flowering plant is bothering me, I think it grows like/as a weed tbh.

The other plant should flower but I cannot remember what the blooms look like! Does anyone have any idea at all? It would be an impressive feat of identification!

The first one is definitely a rampaging weed, bindweed?

LizzieMint · 29/06/2014 06:38

Bindweed is right, it's a pain! We have it in our garden too. Don't know about the other one

The other one is flowering nutmeg.

You need to rip the bindweed out wherever you see it (it's quite therapeutic, honestly!) or it will end up strangling everything

Is the second plant woody nightshade?

If it has flowers turn out to be mostly purple with yellow centers, that look like tomato plant flowers, then that's what it is.

glyphosate will kill bindweed (Convulvulous).

it is very persistent and there will be seeds in the ground.

It's a pity it is so prolific and out-competes other plants, as it has an attractive flower. It likes climbing up fences and growing on the other side.

BaileyWhite · 29/06/2014 15:02

Be careful ripping out the Nightshade- wash hands well, keep them away from your mouth.

1st one bindweed

2nd one looks like Himalayan Honeysuckle- Leycesteria Formosa. The stems go hollow, a bit like bamboo canes and you get drooping, wine coloured flowers followed by berries. I have one in my garden and it is very eyecatching

The white one is bindweed as others have said - as kids we called it "Grandma pop out of bed!" (something to do with being able to squeeze the flower buds and pop them out). any pieces of root left behind will regrow so the real task is getting all the brittle long white roots out if you don't want to use chemicals.

Hard to tell about the other one - if it's leycesteria (or pheasant's eye berry) then I'd expect it to be 5 or 6 feet tall at least.

I would call first one convolvulus and it's not always a weed, depends if it is taking over as to whether you need to take it out. Second does look like leycesteria, I have a few in my garden and only the more mature plants are taller than that, less mature plants are about 3-4 feet tall. It is quite attractive when it flowers.
