Oven features you would pay more for

I need a new oven. It needs to be an under the counter oven and I've rules out double ovens as that means two smaller ovens (right?). I'd rather have one but bigger. Anyway, I quite like the Slide and Hide Neff ovens, what's the verdict on those? And are there any other features you'd pay more for?

The self cleaning feature

whereisshe · 28/06/2014 23:21

Self cleaning!

Rosarosae · 28/06/2014 23:46

Really? I've heard it's really stinky and it smokes the house?

Double oven for me every time. EVen for under the counter top.

It is more the separate grill that I like rather than the two ovens IYSWIM

Get a pyrolytic one. Mine is a Siemens and I wouldn't be without the self cleaning feature. We're extending atm and getting a new kitchen and I'm keeping my oven I love it so much!

LizzieMint · 29/06/2014 06:35

Another vote for pyrolitic! It's amazing. It is a bit stinky at the start of the process (whole cycle takes 90 mins on mine - smells smoky about 5 mins in for about 5-10 mins) but soon passes and you have a sparkly clean oven at the end of it.
Something else mine has which I think is brilliant is a quadruple glazed door, so the door stays cool on the outside. Great for a low-level oven with small children in the house.

lurkerspeaks · 29/06/2014 08:51

A timer so I can set it up to start cooking when I'm out.

SweepTheHalls · 29/06/2014 08:53

Don't buy the AEG pyrolytic, it melts all its circuit board every time you use it!

Optimist1 · 29/06/2014 08:57

A plate warming drawer was on my wishlist and I love it, but I know MN divides into two distinct camps on the need for warm plates! Pyrolitic is indeed a godsend.

rhubarbcrumbleplease · 29/06/2014 08:59

I like an oven with a side opening door rather than a pull down, especially if the hob is on the top.
Yes to self clean.
Happy with my Siemens.

I've got a neff slide & hide oven- it's fab (cooks very well too - everything from roasts to cakes so far perfectly I've had it 6mths)

I've got 2 single ovens stacked in a tall unit - I have the slide & hide at the top (so I can reach in easily) and a regular version at the bottom.
I can't praise the neff ovens too much - best I've ever had.

Bunbaker · 29/06/2014 09:14

The option to switch the fan off. I bake a fair few cakes and they are always moist and light because I don't have a fan oven. Fan ovens tend to dry cakes out.

burnishedsilver · 29/06/2014 09:15

Non fingerprinting is essential if it stainless steel.

The hide and side mechanism on the door looks pretty cool but I can envisage any situation where I would actually use it. What's the purpose of it? If the oven is on and the door is open it's a good thing if you can't get closer than the width of the door. I wouldn't want anyone standing right up against a hot oven. It's usually only open momentarily anyway, so as not to let all the heat out, so I probably wouldn't ever bother sliding it under.

burnishedsilver · 29/06/2014 09:19

Also, pyrolitic is fantastic but from what I can see, it's only available in a single oven. I'd love to find a double with a prolific function. They all seem to have catalytic liners instead.

burnishedsilver · 29/06/2014 09:20

Sorry for all the typos...keyboard on this phone is terrible.

chocoshopoholic · 29/06/2014 09:20

I have the neff slide and hide oven and love it. Our oven is mid tower and combined with the telescopic tray makes getting heavy things out easy.

PigletJohn · 29/06/2014 09:25

now, I prefer a door than opens downwards rather than a side-hinge. You can rest things on it and it catches drips and spills. If you know how you can pull them off for easy cleaning.

have not had a pyrolitic yet but think I might. Surely a powerful extractor hood can suck away the smoke and smell when it starts to burn away the fat?

I also like an oven that is not too low to the floor. I recently changed from a cooker with a big single plus pan-drawer under, to a double, and find the lower one too low. I would probably have been happier with a higher built-in double oven rather than a conventional cooker. In which case I would get a multifunction oven and ditch the separate microwave.

Rosarosae · 29/06/2014 09:30

Thank you all, you are fantastic! Thanks I just need to make up my mind fast!

Another vote for pyrolitic here.
Also, proper telescopic shelves so you can get the shelf all the way out. So much easier!

suze28 · 29/06/2014 09:38

My oven, when on pyrolytic setting, is a bit smelly but never produces any smoke as the door is completely sealed.
I'd also echo the quadruple glazed door recommendation. Pyrolytic heats to 500 degrees and the outside of the oven is always cool to the touch.

LizzieMint · 29/06/2014 11:27

My pyrolitic oven is an AEG and hasn't melted its circuit board yet...
