Has anyone moved their kitchen units?

We want to move our kitchen and we were wondering if we could move the current fittings instead of getting new ones. We have had a few people in for quotes and some have said no, they will be ruined by moving and will need replacing and others seemed to think it would be no problem.

So, I was just wondering what experiences other people have had?

And did anyone do it themselves? (not the plumbing/electrics, just the units I mean)

Doesn't it depend how they're attached to the wall / how the work top is attached? You can obviously do it judging by the number of ebay listings etc for 2nd hand kitchens, but anticipate it depends on how careful you are removing them. I imagine it also depends how long they have been in situ and whether they've been altered to allow for pipes etc. If you have a fairly new kitchen, professionally installed, imagine you could do it. If its a fairly old kitchen, maybe with chunks cout out the back to allow for pipes or whatever, you may have more issues.

We did this. Our units were good quality and about 10 years old; we certainly felt that they had a lot of life left in them. We have to have new worktops, with a bit of jiggery pokery they were fine. The resited kitchen lasted another 8 years, so pretty successful really.

Good point about the pipes etc., thanks, I will check that. I actually had no idea there were kitchens on ebay!

It's a fairly new kitchen I think, the doors are not my style but the frame is in good condition and all the components are the ones we would want anyway. We would need a new worktop though because the position of the sink will have to move.

We did this too, mostly DIY. We didn't move the sink but managed to chase down a bit of matching worktop (its brand was stamped underneath), cut down some corner cupboards to be straight ones and a few other improvements. We ended up with a join in an odd place but I could live with that.

When we eventually took the kitchen out (we did in fact sell it on ebay), the sink unit was the most damaged because they cut out the top to take the sink shape and the sides/back for pipes, but then they were units with a hardboard back so not very structural. Most of the other cupboards were absolutely fine.
If you did have a damaged one you could just get another carcase, they are normally interchangeable if you check your measurements. You can buy all the interior components on ebay right down to drawer runners and spice racks.

I think it's a great idea, people often have little imagination with re-using/repurposing things.
